100+ Surfboards Burn To The Ground In Waikiki, Foul Play Suspected
This is not the first, nor the second, time that Dive Surf has been the target of an arson attack.
UPDATE (10:30 pm PST): It was earlier reported by Hawaii News Now (and re-reported by Stab) that the operator of the surfboard racks where the fire occurred was Dive Surf. We have since learned that this is not the case, and that the surfboards actually belonged to Waikiki residents.
HNN has since updated its article, removing any connection to Dive Surf.
Also, the number of surfboards scorched is now reported to be over 500, and, “Police sources tell HNN that a bystander found a metallic gas can with some sort of liquid still inside of it about a block from the scene.”
(Watch a video of the wreckage here.)
As far as we know, the alleged arsonist is still on the loose. If you happen to be in Waikiki tonight, best to bring your surfboards indoors.
