Tyler Wright Addresses Brother Owen’s Injury In Radio Interview
“It’s been hard as a family to deal with someone who’s had a brain injury.”
Since Owen Wright’s severe concussion late last year we’ve had eyes fixed on his social media, hanging on every post for updates on his condition. He let us know when he made his first steps back into the ocean, when his therapy turned a corner (“back on a short board… yew.”) and more recently, his withdrawal from the back half of this year’s tour. Meanwhile younger sister Tyler has been tearing apart the circuit, finding herself in the number two position and ready for a run at winning the thing. After the Fiji Pro event Tyler was interviewed by Brittany Carter of Australia’s Public Broadcast Network (ABC) on title chasing, family and Owen’s journey. It was an insight into the challenge the Wright’s have faced over the previous half year or so as well as a testament to the strength and support that exist between the siblings.
“It’s been a crazy injury. It’s been hard as a family to deal with someone who’s had a brain injury. It’s surprising, because I’ve found that not a lot people know what it involves, or how to take care of someone in a position like that. It’s an intense injury. I spent a lot of time with him in the first six months. At the same time, everything in dealing with him made my career choices easier because I’ve gained perspective. With Owen, I’ve won competitively, and I’ve kind of grown up a bit. I have bigger responsibilities in my life. When it comes to surfing and making decisions in heats, it’s not a matter of health…It’s a simple, ‘Get that wave.”
