The North Shore’s going through a flat spell at the moment. When you’re in a place as beautiful as Hawaii but there’s no waves around, y’gotta find other ways to make the most of golden afternoons like the one pictured here. In this photo are South Africans Jordy Smith, Travis Logie and Damien Fahrenfort, Peruvians Cristobal de Col and Gabriel Villaran, Australian Jarrad Howse and South African-turned-Australian Craig Anderson, all playing a game of soccer at the Sunset Beach Elementary School.
Photog Ryan Miller was riding by on his bicycle when he was pulled into the game: “Another shit day for waves on the North Shore, but another amazing day to do anything except surfing. I had a big day with the family at Waimea Bay, jumping off the rock and swimming. In the afternoon, I went on a bike ride and got caught in a pick-up game of soccer at Sunset Beach Elementary School. These guys were all amazing at soccer, especially Jordy, who would be pursuing soccer professionally if he wasn’t surfing. Being from a country that focuses mostly on American-style football, I was playing like shit.”
