The weather that you usually associate Hawaii with – blue sky, green water, golden sun – has taken a coupla days off. Instead, there’s been breeze from the north-east, an overcast sky, frequent showers and not ideal swell. And, the frenzy has been replaced with hibernation. Getting in the brine on a day like this ain’t easy, especially with a favourable forecast. But as photog Trevor Moran says, Pete Mendia was one of very few who got in the mix regardless of conditions. The reason? “It’s still Hawaii,” says Trevor. “Most of the world would be stoked to surf head high waves with hardly a soul out, yet after a few days here it’s easy to get spoiled and forget the conditions you’ll be going home to. Here is a man wise enough to cherish ever waking moment on this island and surf every wave he can catch. Not quite the waves you might anecdotally ‘draw on your school book,’ but still pretty damn good.”
