Mick Fanning, pictured here in a below-sea level gem, is one of eight men still fighting in the Billabong Pro, Rio De Janeiro. After a straight-up marathon day at Barra Da Tijuca today, in what can only be described as ridiculously fun conditions, the quarterfinalists made themselves known over three long rounds. Riding shotgun with Mick is Jordy Smith, Filipe Toledo, Kelly Slater, Adriano De Souza, Sebastian Zietz, Ace Buchan and Gabs Medina. Y’can read (and see) more about that over here.
Mick’s road to the biz end wasn’t without its bumps. Though he steamed past Brett Simpson in round three with a 16.53 combined total, he fell short in round four of Jordy Smith and Filipe Toledo, the latter of whom was too busy having heat of his life. Howevs, Mick pulled it together in round five to take down Michel Bourez (which, admittedly, wouldn’t have been too hard considering Michel had a shocker and only put 2.86 combined points on the board). Anyhow, winning, as they say, is winning, and Mick now faces seven others tomorrow to try and scoop another win in Brazil. Don’t miss a second.
