“This was actually my first swim out there at Backdoor,” says the shooter of this sequence, Benny Krum. “Right when I swam out, a set landed on my head and pinned me on the reef for a few seconds. It’s funny, you’re trying to keep your camera safe and above the reef more than your body. Luckily the surf was small (for out there; six to 10 foot faces) and it was good to make some minor contact with the reef to gauge confidence and perception. I swam over to Off The Wall to escape the crowd and shoot my friend Conner Lester. Kiron Jabour and Chris Ward were trading off sets at Backdoor. After linking up with Conner on a few I swam back over to shoot Backdoor and I watched Kiron fade into this section that was about to slab over me.”
