In his round three heat at the Rip Curl Pro, Bells Beach yesterday against wildcard Stu Kennedy, Kelly Slater put on a performance that he was less than proud of. Conditions had just started turning cross-shore and a little sour, and the waves were a little slower, a little bumpier, and a little less forgiving.
“You know, I can’t do much worse than that and make it through heats, so… we’ll see what happens,” said Kelly after the heat. He then added that he thinks Joel Parkinson’s a danger in the contest: ”Y’know, Parko obviously looks… everyone’s seen him surf today and he surfed great. He’s also right in sync with the surf. If he can keep that up, he’ll be tough.” He then added, in typically coy Kelly fashion, “We’ll see though. I like to have my bad ones early and get my good ones later. He’s having his good ones early so he’s gotta keep that standard up. I’ve got a lot to look forward to though.”
