“The level’s going up every event,” Kekoa Bacalso, pictured here, told Stab last year after falling off tour at the Teahupoo cutoff. “You have to do a backflip, a cartwheel and a karate kick to get a fucken’ 6.5 these days.” Kekoa, a long time Rip Curl team rider, lost his sponsor very soon after feeling the sting of the cutoff and has since been slogging it out in qualifying events in the hope of once again becoming a Dream Tour surfer (which he is more than worthy of being. Such power!) His place on tour is also an important one, since he was “one of the most fun guys to hang with,” according to photog Ryan Miller. Ryan says that yesterday at Backdoor, there weren’t a whole lot of waves coming through but, when they did, they were all this good. And Kekoa was right in the mix, ruling.
