“Everyone thought it was going to be on and got down there early but it seemed to have a little bit of morning sickness,” says photographer Azad Sellars of yesterday at Snapper Rocks on the Gold Coast, where the first World Tour event of the year will soon unload, which’ll also be the first official WCT event under the World Surfing League banner. But, more pertinently… “At about 8am the SW kicked in and just cleaned everything up. Guys like Asher Pacey, Midget and Jackson Coffey were on it all day and then in the arvo Mick Fanning, Kerrzy and Bede Durbidge rocked up. By then, the wind was kind of cross-shore but the swell had jacked a bit through the day and it was still super fun. It ended up being a bit of a who’s who of surfing with Steph Gilmore, Alana Blanchard and Jack Freestone kicking about too. This one of Kerrzy’s was in the arvo as the tide was running out – there wasn’t many hollow ones behind the rock, but that one was a nugget!”
