Jordy Smith, Riding the Jellyfish, Hawaii
See that little thing Jordy’s bouncing around on? It’s called the Jelly Fish. Ian Chisholm (who made the thing) runs a board shop down in Bells Beach, Australia, where Jordy and his dad, Graham, have been going for years. Ian repairs Jordy’s boards and sells his old ones for him, whenever he’s in town. One day Jordy was in the shop, flipping out over the tints and pigments that Ian’s become so skilled at doing over the years (it’s actually a fine art – y’gots to colour the resin, not the foam, and can be super tedious.) Ian said he’d make something for Jordy, and Jordy told him he wanted a board that he could ride in small junky surf, but not a quad or a twinny. So Ian made him a 5’6″ x 20’1/2″ x 2’5/8″, which you can see him riding here. Jordy says it ain’t quite as responsive as a thruster, but it sure as hell is fun.
