This sure looks dreamy, doesn’t it? Fluoro blue water and not a cloud in sight. But, what you can’t tell from looking at this shot of Jordy Smith at Glen Beach in Cape Town, South Africa, is that the water is freezing cold. Which is an odd sensation when the air temp’s a balmy 35 degrees. “There wasn’t much swell on offer today but we were straight into it right off the plane,” says photog Ryan Miller. “My plane landed at 10am and we were in the water by noon. Just barely enough time to drop my bags and put my water housing together. After two 10 hour flights and a 14 hour layover my already tiny brain was operating at about 10 percent capacity. It was a massive struggle just to make sure I had all the wing nuts on my housing correctly.”
Aforementioned temperature contrast aside, summer in Cape Town is beautiful. “The beaches are teeming with wildlife of the human kind and it’s blazing hot,” says Ryan. “But the water actually gets colder here in the summer. Cold enough to make booties mandatory and have half the pack scrambling for a hood and gloves if it gets over chest high. Such an awkward sensation suiting up in a 4/3 when it’s 35 degrees outside and the cold water wax is melting off your board on the walk to the water.” Luckily, Jordy is more than used to the temp difference.
