Jordy Smith (pictured here) recently returned to his home country of South Africa, paying a visit to Cape Town for the Red Bull Nightshift event. The Night Shift concept is, as the name suggests, all about drenching a beach break with floodlights at night time and sending a bunch of surfers and jetskis into the arena. There’s always a different vibe at night time sporting events, and the Night Shift is no different. There’s a sense of urgency which gives way to excitement.
Jordy hung out in Cape Town for the week with fellow South-African buddies Craig Anderson, Damien Fahrenfort, Travis Logie and Warwick Wright. A heat wave hit just around the time they were there, so the beaches were packed and the water was unseasonably warm. Photog Richard Johnson shot this moment of Jordy flair on one of those warm days.
For a video of the Nightshift event, check out Jordy’s site. It’s the video with the mountain-setting frame-grab.
