Jordy Smith, back foot determination, Bells Beach
“This big human has been out at Bells three times a day for the past two days, feeling out boards,” says photog Ryan Miller of South African Jordy Smith, pictured here. Fitting that Ryan should use the word ‘big’ in describing Jordy on this occasion – Jordy’s frame never looks more powerful than when he’s cleaving a track like this, driven with back foot. “Look at that line he’s putting down,” continues Miller. “You think those turns are what it takes to win at Bells?” Maybe they are. Jordy’s always strong in Torquay and, with the addition of a little belatedness, it ain’t too different from his beloved J-Bay, at times. Watch out for this man over the following week.
