John John Florence, drumming at Dungeons, South Africa
You may’ve heard or seen rumblings about John John Florence’s recent stint in South Africa. He’s been scooping footage (which he never stops doing, but always keeps close to his chest), for a completely undefined project, which is totally speculative and might not have even begun to take form yet. Mr Florence adores South Africa. For the last six years, he’s been spending a month there between July and August with good South African pal Frank Solomon. This year he brought Albee Layer along with him – y’know the gent from Maui who stomped surfing’s first double oop and also charges Jaws? Yup, that guy.
“They’ve been scoring great waves around the wilder, colder Cape Town Atlantic,” says South African photographer Alan Van Gysen. “One of the prized big wave spots in Africa is Dungeons, so when a massive long period swell showed up off South America, John John, along with the SA big wave fraternity, got prepped and ready to charge. This was a smaller warm-up wave for JJ, but no matter the size he approaches any wave with the same casual, iconic style. They left yesterday for Tahiti but got some of the best Dungeons had to offer.” – Elliot Struck
