Today, John John Florence’s two scoring rides at the Oakley Pro, Bali were again defined by a single move. Which ain’t to say that he wasn’t combo’ing, and linking, and flowing, ’cause he totally was. But, like the alley oop in round one that required retrieval of jaw from floor, today John lay down a searing turn that for some ineffable reason was wildly memorable. Maybe it’s the fact that for the last coupla years, facework has been the least impressive element of his very impressive game. Maybe it was the style he drove through it. Maybe it ain’t even as impressive or memorable as we think, and Dear John has the wool pulled firmly over our peepers? But, we think not. And, John’s excuse for so unfairly wowing us all? “I like surfing,” he said. And that’s it.
We kid! “I’ve been surfing a lot, and I’ve just kinda been working on my turns, ’cause that’s definitely something I needed to work on. That was a good section for a turn, I think anyone would’ve done a good turn right there. I got lucky, I guess.” Modesty shall get you everywhere, Mr Florence.
