John John Florence. The kid was electric at Chopes today. In round three, against fellow Hawaiian Sea Bass, John surfed only four waves. The first was an 8.77, followed by a 9.67, followed by a 9.93 and finally, a flat 10 – you might call that sustained growth. Even Sea Bass’s 9.37 and 9.13, which would’ve won him all but two other heats today, couldn’t get it done against John. You’ll remember that Sea Bass was the gent who pushed John into that oop at Keramas last year. Something about the Kauaian really lights a fire under Mr Florence, and we dig it.
“I just went for it out there today, I’m really stoked it picked up and I’m so happy to get some waves,” said John John. “The last few heats I’ve had I haven’t really got too many waves. The 10-point wave I got was crazy, I just hoped for the best and it worked out.”
Yes it did. More on today’s action, here.
