It’s photographs like this, in places like J-Bay, where admiration must shift to the lensman. A sublime moment of a John Florence carve captured from an ocean full of risk. “J-Bay is a fickle beast, even when it’s two foot and you are only 10 metres from the rocks, you feel vulnerable,” says local photog Sacha Specker. “There are a lot of sharks in the water. Most people don’t even know they are there. I shot this frame of a metre-and-a-half gully shark while there were about 30 guys free surfing. Nobody saw it. It was an arms length from me. Relaxed and just checking me out, but nonetheless you get a fright when you first see them.”
