“This shot was taken during the ‘swell of the decade’ at The Box,” says photographer Nic Risch of the image you see here, which features Jay Davies standing tall (and he’s a big boy) at WA’s squarest. “I think that was the second day when it started dropping off a bit. Most of the sets were still very massive and just a few of them were actually rideable, but Jay made sure he was paddling on most of them and scored the biggest bombs of the day with ease, as this shot shows. Swimming out there on that day wasn’t a piece of cake. The swell wasn’t perfectly westerly so we still had those odd southerly sets breaking into the channel, making the job a bit harder. Personally, my shots were completely out of focus on every single wave but this one. Still well worth the swim!”
