Finally, A Wave In Rio To Actually Get Excited About!
(Save Julian Wilson’s 9.77)
For most, knowledge of Brazil’s waves is confined to what’s shown on world tour webcasts. Perception lives in likely crowded beach breaks that look fun to the average surfer and spark a yearly debate over the worst stop on tour. However, today was entertaining; at the very least consistent. We revelled in the notion that it’s better than Postinho. Then this shot kindled our inbox.
“This wave is called Shock,” says photographer Matheus Couto. “It breaks in front of the rocks and is a very beautiful place to surf. I was shooting from the water this day, trying to get a good shot. Marcelo Trekinho helped me by pulling into this huge barrel. Our crew here – the local surfers and photographers – have been searching for slabs in Rio for the past year. This wave doesn’t break often but when it does I dedicate my time to photographing it as it is my home break. The Shock is a very difficult wave and every session we learn more about it.”
