Yesterday at the Billabong Pipe Masters, Dusty Payne, 24 years old and from Hawaii, fought his way into round three. This event, as it has been in the past for Dusty, is really crucial. After a year plagued by a ripped MCL (thanks, Lowers), Dusty ain’t in an enviable spot on the rankings. He and Patty Gudauskas, who also scrapped into round three, are both one heat away from temporarily advancing into a secure a secure berth via a top 10 spot on the ASP World Ranking. If either man advances to round four, Brett Simpson is outta there. And if both of them advance, then Brett Simpson and Dion Atkinson are both out. Throw the title race in the mix, and there really ain’t another event on tour with this many moving parts.
