Thumb boards, like the one pictured here being thrown over Kingscliff by Dru Adler, are gaining popularity in ultra-small surf. Unconventional though they look, seems like they can scoop a lil’ extra speed on hatchbacks (smaller waves). Certainly enough for Dru to throw heat like this on a day of dwarfish waves. “Dru just texted me saying he won the Palm Beach Boardriders Open division and got engaged to (pro surfer gal) Angie Koops last night,” says photog Simon Muirhead, who shot this. “So, it’s a pretty good week. Now, if only there were waves…”
