Clay Marzo, golden gateway in West Oz
With the sun diffused through a thin layer of cascading salt, Clay Marzo settles into position on his backhand, and takes in the view. You can tell by the expression on his silhouetted face, that he’s more worried about taking in the moment, than popping out the other end. But you know he will, it’s Clay. “I was actually out there by myself before the sun came up shooting empties,” says photog Kerby Brown. “Clay paddled out just as that golden light hit. He loves surfing all the slabs around home, especially when no one else is around. He’s messed up at riding backhand barrels so I hung out there a little longer to try and nail a few different angles. This frame came out pretty cool I thought. Clay’s fun to shoot with, he’s such a freakish surfer.”
