“We made the jump to Nazaré an hour north of the comp while the finals were on with Julian,” says photographer Ryan Miller. Nazaré is the kinda place that’s always three times bigger than anywhere else. You may remember Garrett McNamara’s one million foot wave out there, or Shane Dorian’s paddle sesh. Anyhow… “It was big and as shifty of a wave as you could ever imagine,” continues Miller. “Julian was determined to get one, but severely under-gunned on his 5’11”. He ended up getting a bomb but with such a small board and the waves moving all over the place, it was impossible to be in the right spot. Garrett, Carlos Burle, Maya Gabeira, Coco Nogales and a few others were out there towing. Carlos got this pretty good barrel pictured, before we packed it up in search of something more paddleable. This stretch is a really special place. It can go from chest high and the most peaky and fun beach great you have ever surfed to amazing tubes just meters off the sand to arguably, actually, very arguably, the biggest wave in the world.”
