Of all the occasions on which Rod Owen has photographed this spot on Australia’s South Coast, this wipeout stands out in his mind above most others. Looking at the imminent doom here, are you surprised? On this day, the sets were coming in square. Which, in the mind of Brett Burcher, meant that the best route to take would be a deeper takeoff, to try and backdoor (check out his track). Which meant that on every wave, he was real deep. Sometimes too deep.
On this particular wave, Brett “pushed his luck a bit too much,” as Rod says. “He was too deep, just had to point it and got the flogging of the day.” And on those days, after those wipeouts, the lineup can turn very serious for a short but intense period. “I remember his board just tombstoning for ages,” says Rod. “And I starting wigging out a little. But, eventually he popped up with thumbs raised and slowly paddled back over for a chat and a bit of a giggle.”
