Anthony Walsh bends time on the North Shore, HI
If you grew up watching Seinfeld and Montaj then you’ll remember when the fish-eye angle was vogue black. Shot straight into the barrel, mouth wide, lens even more so, the angle sometimes brushed with the blast of flash made covers, double page ads and editorial spreads. But its time in lights is over, and an ed’s only move now should it slide across the inbox is to push it a little quicker to the trash. That is, unless it’s Tony Heff truly maximising the benefit of bent glass. “Pipe was eight-to-10 foot with some 12 footers and really glassy,” says Tony. “No one was swimming at Backdoor so I got my fish-eye and swam out to The Pit. I saw Walshy paddling and I knew I was positioned so that he’d pass by me super close. I turned my lens to look out of the barrel and took the elevator ride up to the top of the wave and hung in there as long as I could. Even when it’s small you run the risk of being sucked over with the lip. I don’t know how I didn’t on this one, but thank God because it was a heavy wave. It’s a cool angle with the fish-eye, because looking straight into the barrel is so 90’s. Unless it’s really big.”
