In the summer of 1968, Tom Wolfe published a book called The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Wolfe’s accounts of psychedelia — its noises, colors, and fantasies — became the benchmark of New Journalism.
[The test] depicts the change in the ethics of the American young, whose contemporary morality is based on aesthetic rather than social values. “If it’s beautiful, do it,” one New York Times journalist wrote on Wolfe’s culture-defying scribbles.
Fifty years after Kool-Aid, Dane Reynolds boards the school bus for the Electric Acid Surfboard Test (E.A.S.T.), where we celebrate elegant surfing and the creative minds who facilitate it.
The thing about counter culture is that it’s best enjoyed together. Just ask Warped Tour, Coachella, Burning Man….

So, seven internet series later, we’ve decided to bring E.A.S.T. to you — thanks to our friends at Kona Big Wave and Vans. On Sunday, September 28, we’ll be throwing a desert party at Palm Springs Surf Club, where you can test 100+ experimental surfboards alongside your favorite surfers like Mikey February, Harry Bryant, Mason Ho, Nathan Fletcher, Holly Wawn, Tosh Tudor and more.

You’ll also have access to the most inventive shapers in the world like: Ryan Lovelace, Jaleessa Vincent, Matt Parker, Donald Brink, Matt Biolos, Ellis Ericson, Britt Merrick, Alex Knost, and Tom Morat — to fondle, talk polyurethane, and spit surfboard theory to your heart’s content. When you’re not surfing or talking about surfing, immerse yourself in music from the Allah-Las, RIO KOSTA, Cut Snake, BRICK!, Grady Strange, Malcolm Brown, and Luke C.
Oh, and if you’re a Stab Premium subscriber, flash us some proof on the day, and we’ll slap a free, limited-run E.A.S.T Fest tee in your hands.
PS: The shaper/surfer lists are growing faster than our current appetite for electric blue A-frames, so stay tuned for updates. Unlike some festivals, we’ll be upfront with you about our tiered system. See the ticket breakdown below:
