Salt Water Brands Speak Out Against WSL Petition
“Let’s agree on issues and bring our concerns collectively to the powers that be.”
A few weeks ago the WSL announced their partnership with We Are One Ocean on the 30 x 30 petition. The digital document encourages world leaders to protect 30 percent of our global ocean by the year 2030, or 30×30.
While we can all agree preserving the ocean is an important cause, it’s been argued that this petition is harmful to select watermen/waterwomen. Specifically, the fishing community. The petition would increase restrictions on fishing, putting many people out of a job. Companies like Salty Crew, AFTCO, and Shimano have taken a stance against the petition’s current demands. “It’s creating a wedge between surfers and fishermen,” CJ Hobgood said on Instagram.
The fishing companies are asking that the WSL and surfing community include the fishing community’s voice.
