Picking J Bay Winners Is Like Putting Socks On A Rooster
Harder than you might expect.
The J Bay waiting period starts today.
Pre-event, the waves have been cooking but like every single CT event this year the forey looks to come off the boil for the opening of the waiting period. This raises the question ‘Was E Lo the baby in the dirty wozzle bathwater?’ A patsy for the surf witch who ritually spoils the broth?
More questions than answers at this point but “2-4 ft with variable winds” sounds… ominous.
Big or small (sans the dreaded NW ‘devil’s wind’) J Bay is pretty incredible. A wave so perfect in shape and speed that one of the hardest things to do is commit to a turn without butchering the damn thing. Barrels, airs, full-bodied turns – they’re all on the menu.
Key is “having a turn for every shape and every curve of the wave in front of you”, says local coach Duncan Scott.

Here filmmaker and photographer Alan Van Gysen makes his Betonline.AG picks for the overall event winner.
Mens: Ethan Ewing, Jordy Smith and Jack Robbo
Womens: Molly Picklum, Steph Gilmore and Caity Simmers
