Dion Agius Surfs Ulus On An OId 6’10, Then Saws It To Pieces

“I don’t want to do this, but…sorry Pyzel.”

Uluwatu Surf Villas is a hell of a joint.

Perched on an infinity cliff overlooking Temples (with private access down, no less), the lux yet understated establishment has become somewhat of a Bukit institution since it opened, regularly hosting events, film screenings, residents such as Gerry Lopez doing yoga retreats etc.

The latest resident was Dion Agius, who produced a whole show’s worth of sculptures for the latest installment of his rolling ‘Noids’ art project (which we covered extensively here) during the two weeks he stayed at the Villas. Noids, of course, being the curiously-shaped pieces of art (occasionally furniture) made from previously deceased surfboards.

It’s hard to think of a better place to hole up for a few weeks surfing and crafting, but that’s exactly what Dion did recently, document of which you can see up top in the first installment of Ulu Surf Villa’s ‘Made Here’ video series.

Commence the ripping and the tearing.

It’s a breezy 10 minutes, but a couple of interesting take aways:
– Firstly ‘Noid’ is ‘Dion’ backwards, and it was Dion’s nickname back in the day in Tasmania. Huh.
– Secondly, Dion’s Ulu instalment was inspired by the fruity shapes of the pools and critters he saw whilst wandering on the reef at low tide, combined with daydreams of the symbols of lost tribes living deep within the Indonesian jungle.
– Lastly, what started as something to fill the time and keep up with Ozzie Wright — while Dion had a broken leg and was living at Oz’s compound — has turned into a full-blown passion, and a medium (up cycling broken or discarded surfboards) that Dion intends to continue exploring for the next decade.

Give Uluwatu Surf Villas a follow and enjoy the daydreams.
