Video Of Great White Reeled In At Huntington Beach Sparks State Investigation

Time to throw more gasoline on the shark hysteria fire pit. Last Friday, a video emerged of fisherman at Huntington Beach Pier reeling in what almost certainly appears to be a juvenile great white to a cheering crowd. And the video, which has now reached 6k views, has sparked controversy with the omnipresent California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Why? Well, great white sharks have been a protected species off California’s coast since 1994, and capturing one is both illegal and can result in fines up to $10k. According to lifeguard, this particular catch still has yet to be reported.

It isn’t clear what happened to the shark after the video ended either, but authorities believe is was released back into the ocean.

Warning: The vid’s a bit graphic, especially if you’re not keen to learn about what step one of your fish fillet looks like.
