War(d) Stories: The Tour

This is absolutely worth 26 minutes of your time. The Tour instalment of War(d) stories is something of a mini-documentary. Opening with an interview with Andy Irons about Chris (“I rode for MCD just so I could hang out with guys like Wardo”), and including some real good file footage of Wardo’s tour efforts (narrated by Dave Stansfield), as well as interviews with Kelly Slater and many others, this is as insightful and informative a clip as you’ve seen in a long time.

“He’s the Opposite of the guys who try really hard. He’s also the Opposite of the guys who try really hard not to try. This episode is a must-see for any surfer seriously considering a competitive career.”

Ward is a legend!! Andy, Cory, Bruce and Wardo last of the antiheros. Look at today’s modern youth surfing…..corporate puppets. Other than John nobody charges anymore. Modern Collective and the like focus on being artsy and trendy. What is happening to surfing?

growing up watching him and corey in the lost videos transformed the way i view surfing. that whole crew didnt give a shit about image but they were always ripping and charging when it mattered. show me footage of a 16 yr old kid today today that matches up with whats really goin wrong/on and the original 5’5″x19″1/4 i dare you.

    Very very true bufu I think a lot of us want to see the animal come out of a few of these young kids I want to see Medina start taking some bombs instead of the small beachy like barrels he took to scrap his way to the finals at pipe while others were falling from the sky.
    People like Julian went out of there way to show people that there more than just beachy air ponys by taking on pipe and teapoo like a mad men in the last two events.
    The tour needs chargers that can do airs and turns as well as I for one will laugh at Medina if he ever becomes world champ and there is no footage of him surfing any slaby wave over 5ft.

I dunno if the term is anti-hero, or super talented underachiever, derailed by his own bad attitude. Make no mistake, the guy rips, but aside from winning the Indo comp, he is trolling irrelevantly around doing every 3 star QS comp in the hope of re qualifying. At least Bruce kept his nose clean long enough to get a signature win, before dropping off the Tour at his own discretion. Even Bobby want Shaft on the ASP and walked away. Watching Wardo try so hard to get back, now that he is diminished, is a bit to desperate. Just free surf and blow up.

Bottom line is Wardo RIPS and is a Legend of his OWN KIND….. Everyone has an Opinion as everyone has an Asshole. And YES – Ward, Cory, Bruce and Andy are all ANTI HERO Status – The Surf Indusrty Puppet Master Days have taken over. Ps. For all the tight pants and trendy new age surf film makers, YOU should really take note on how these series of Ward Stories are made, because this is SURFING and how to put together your clips, THE REAL WAY…………..

How classic is it at 20:00 that the guy in France putting on his vest is Davo, his Aussie alterego. This guy is in the all time top ten for pure talent, surfing so smooth, powerful and natural. Loved his stoked marriage proposal last week on the podium at Padang. Gold.
