the surf industry is too dependent on sales to stores that cannot appreciate or understand or are scared of surf culture. why upset them when you can have tame boring monkey team riders who will jump through hoops and not upset the balance. if you need to give them personality create one by the way they dress and pose for photos. let them be creative with art and dance music. the best part is that all the surfers think that is what surfing is all about. the companies now have a bunch of docile controllable riders. team managers cannot control real charisma, real rebels or real surfing. and surfing is boring as fuck to the mainstream now – and the mainstream is turning away from it. this the predicament the surf companies are in today… and thus the predicament of being Davo or Wardo.
