The saviour
At his peak, Jose Luciano Casillas was one of Europe’s most talented surfers. That was before a dreadful run of substance abuse, psychotic episodes and trouble with the law all but ended his career, and almost his life, all of which is captured poignantly in this short film. The story is a familiar one to surfers, and timely given the circumstances surrounding the death of one of the sport’s all time greats recently.
For Jose, salvation comes after he encounters a mysterious bearded figure one day at the beach. Shrouded in light, the man appears to walk, even dance and jive across the water and Jose, baring the mortally wounded soul as he is, feels compelled to approach him. He speaks softly, so much so Jose has to lean in to hear him, and with humility. He tells Jose in no uncertain terms what his path to redemption is: read the bible and surf.
So who was that mysterious stubble-faced man on the beach that day?
No, idiot. Curren, it was Tom Curren. By all reports the film played out to a rapturous reception at the recent San Sebastian film festival.
@realsurfer you obviously have never experienced, or had anyone close to you experience, depression and self loathing to such an extent that it hinders and rational thinking. In my opinion you are the one who is weak to have such a closed mind on people with a mental illness. This may be a complete stereotype but i am guessing you come from a background of privilege who never had to worry about much much more than what your buddies think about you in the line up. I hope one day you get to the point this guy has and you can experience how fucking horrible it is to go through a depressive state like this. Maybe then you can not be such a douche

This guy’s story is a dime a dozen in the surf industry. You have a weak mind Jose, and you needed 3rd party intervention because of that weakness. You blew an opportunity to be a pro surfer and have a full ride around the world and you screwed it up. Your story is good for the weak not the strong, we, I, whatever, look at you as a joke and a waste of time.

Well said Kristie. realsurfer: It takes more ‘strength’ than you’ll ever know to survive through an experience like that. To climb your way out the hellish state this man had to go through for whatever reason. Where it would be easier to just end it all. Well done to this guy, he had to face his demons and made it out. Have some compassion and be glad you were not born into a life like that.

How about you report on someone that lives a good life, is good to their family who has been good to them and has good values, is polite and gives back. You know, a role model. RE:NW COMMENT ONE, Funny how we see Rabbit as some pillar of society wen he completly destroyed two generations of surfers from the 80,s and 90,s , for his self fear of loathing of the thought that there would be have been anther world champ from cooly[an with out his interferense , oh i did say cockcain an acid to name a few !] im sure with out question there would be atleast 5 guys destined to be world surfing champions, poor kids never had chance , a terriable waste but a huge lesson in life!

Jeez, it is easy to slander someone on these boards. Just because someone has a joint or whatever at club comps during the 80′s and 90′s like most of us did doesn’t mean that they are dealing drugs to the groms. It is very easy for stories to get distorted over a 20 or 30 year period by Chinese whispers. Read Rabbits book, “Bustin Down The Door”. He admits he did some crazy shit back in the day but don’t slander someone as a drug dealer over the internet when he has no way of defending himself. If you have evidence take it to the authorities.
