The Man on the Mike
Of all the highlights from the history making Volcom Fiji, Pro there is one that’s been disappointingly glossed over. The performance of 37 year old North Shore lifeguard and big wave surfer, Dave Wassel behind the mike during the event broke new ground in surf-calling.
“I’ll tell you the truth, it’s something I’ve been practicing for 20 years at Pipeline, just sitting on the porch talking handfuls of shit,” he told Ain’t That Swell recently.
The Hawaiian was rolling out one-liners like – and I’m channelling Wassel here – whale steaks at an Okinawan Wendy’s (close?).
Gabriel Medina became the “spider monkey jacked up on mountain dew!” Joel ‘park it’ Parkinson was the “tube whisperer” aka “the Cesar Milan (dog whisperer) of surfing,” and a scintillating backhand reo would be known as the “backhand hacky sack attack.” He appeared shirtless in the commentary booth, had a passable though comical handle on the local dialect but it was when the waves got big that Dave really found his voice. “Are you kidding me?” said with mike-distorting vigour became his signature catchphrase.
“It was a pleasure to be put there in front of Fiji and the world’s best surfers,” says Dave of the opportunity. No Dave, the pleasure was, and continues to be, all ours. – Jed smith

The tube starts at around 0.39 but the one-word commentary at 0.43 is out of the out of this world. We sure do love Dave, too. Also, we have to drag up the clip where Wassel called Adriano De Souza Snookie from the Jersey Shore. So good!
bit amatuerish for me. sounds like a cliche character out of Fast Times. I don’t know if this is what surfing needs. If they want it be considered professional they should look and sound more professional.

I thought he came off as a bit of a fat, boorish blow hard. How many time a minute did he and Alex Gray say, “Are you kidding me?”
I wish the ASP would pick one set of announcers to cover all the events instead of letting the individual sponsors drag in whatever “Spicoli” is signed to their Label. The same could be said for the Tech crews. Some professionalism and consistency in the Webcasts couldn’t hurt the sport!
i wish the ASP would flush out dave stansfield. if i want to watch good morning LA summer edition id move there. more wassell and commentators that make it interesting! lets not turn into tennis too quick.
I’m sure we don’t want to turn into tennis. I mean the winner of the Australian Open won approx. $2,305,000.00 for hitting a little ball over a net while surfers like Dave Wassell have to moonlight as lifeguards, so they can risk life and limb in giant waves for peanuts. I agree let’s keep the sport stupid and brokeass!
