The best of Dane, Lowers Trestles

He may be the ASP’s dancing bear but no one on tour gives post heat interviews like Dane Reynolds. Here’s some of his best work:

“I want to make it so you can’t win a world title without surfing that way,” he told Stab after stomping then world title contender and favourite for the Quiksilver Pro Coolangatta, Joel Parkinson.

“It should be the wave of the decade to get a [a perfect score],” he said after the same heat when asked whether any of his performance defining waves deserved a ten out of ten.

“It doesn’t feel natural doing that. I feel aggressive on the wave,” was Dane’s reply when asked whether a employing a more conservative approach at times would enhance his chances of winning a world title. Then adding, “A world title isn’t a goal of mine, right now.”

“I was nervous about Kolohe…I hate surfing against younger kids. When I surf against someone like (Chris) Davo I know what to expect. Kolohe can do huge moves and that’s usually my deal against other guys,” Dane told the ASP after trouncing American super grom, Kolohe Andino. Could a kid receive a better endorsement from his idol?

“Shit, I felt pretty good (out there). I don’t make airs like that every day,” said Dane after nailing a Slob air reverse on one wave and a tweaked finner to hook on the next for the highest combined total of the recent Hurley Pro Trestles, event.

“I was totally mindfucked. I lost the mental picture of surfing a wave well and from then on I was done. Two minutes in I knew I was gonna lose. I was defeated from the first bobble,” was Dane’s reasoning for losing to Bede Durbidge in the semi-final of the Hurley Pro, Trestles.- Jed Smith

Jimmy Wilson

Jimmy Wilson. Jimmicane. Jimbrodamus. Which blows your hair back? Take your pick and strap in, ’cause Jimmy rides bumpy. You want the truth? Jimmy will give you his truths in the blink of an eye and won’t apologise if it stings. Opinions are nothing on their own, so the 26-year-old certainly has the skills to back up. A good photo, for Jimmicane, is ineffable. “You know right when you lay your eyes on it,” he says. One such photo was the image of Kelly Slater’s full-rotation air-reverse during the Quiksilver Pro, New York against Taj Burrow. “It was rewarding to get such a special image with literally hundreds of other lenses shooting the same maneuver. Also the fact that I’m from the East Coast and that was an iconic event and iconic air by the greatest surfer of all time. I feel very fortunate.” And if you ask Jimmy where surf photography’s headed, it’s a simple answer: “iPhones”.
