The 2012 Hurley Pro, Lowers – day two

Round two of the Hurley Pro, Trestles left smoke on the water. Some guns went down (Owen Wright, the Hobgoods, Miggie Pupo, etc) and some big scores were dropped. Jeremy Flores posted the day’s highest heat total to beat Patty Gudauskas in one of the day’s best heats. “Pat’s an amazing air surfer and I was expecting him to do crazy airs,” said Jeremy. “I didn’t want to fall into that game because I’m not really an air guy. I wanted to show a difference in my carving turns and mix it up a bit. I know the first guy I saw doing that under-the-lip turn was Andy. It’s just this one turn that I can do and I just stick to a few of my tricks whenever I need to do them or need a score.”

But leading up to this point, J-Flo hasn’t had a whole lotta confidence. “I’ve been feeling so lost since I’ve been here,” he continued. “I’ve been trying six or seven different boards because I usually ride a 5’11″ and I’ve been trying to ride a 5’9.” It’s good in some waves and in others it’s not as powerful and in my first heat I felt like I was doing little kid turns. I hate that. I want to be able to push my turns as hard as I could. Last night I had a fun surf and in this heat I was finally feeling better.”

Joel Parkinson came back after a not-so-hot round one, to beat wildcard Conner Coffin in round two’s opening heat. “Surfing in that first heat of the day can be difficult because you don’t really know what’s going to be happening with the judging,” said Joel. “You feel like a guinea pig heat and you’ve got to get out there and just start it. Whether it’s a 5 or a 9, you have to just take it. It was clean and offshore and I knew Conner has a really nice carve and I was thinking I’d match that. There were lots of waves early this morning and once the heat started it was pretty slow so I was glad I got that one 9.”

Johnny Florence, 19 and from Hawaii, took down wildcard Evan Geiselman in conditions he ain’t used to. “It’s a weird swell direction,” said John. “I don’t think I’ve ever surfed it like this. When sets do come there are some fun ones, but a lot of the waves are too peaky. I’m just going to try and have fun. I think I took my heat too seriously yesterday. I couldn’t find a rhythm and coming up against Evan was really scary. He’s such a good surfer and he could easily get a 9. It was fun to surf with him. We haven’t surfed against each other since we were little.”

First heat of the morning tomorrow will be between Matt Wilkinson and Kelly Slater. And, there’s a swell building. So, catch it all here.

Ahhhh… If only Jadson were blond and blue and handsome, and sponsored by Nike. He would have smoked Julian. But, alas, racist judges score safety airs over powerful hacks. Jadson’s style is not as graceful as Julian’s but squat, but if you were to judge on power and commitment…
Jadson won.
And no, I am not Brazilian

2.

Everyone just surfed really well and the waves were just perfect and all the pros really love each other and all the sponsors are really cool and love the sport more than money and the judges were spot on and everyone had fun, lots and lots of fun and tomorrow kelly will ride to trestles on a pink unicorn with twenty four red roses in his asshole and hand one to each surfer and declare them all equal world champions.

3.

I heard Cali is not a safe place, Jadson just got robbed up there today.

4.

hahaha! The comments on here are always interesting!
Lots of people with lots of very subjective comments, but….. probably very little ability…… these surfers are in the top 32 for a reason!
When Kelly starts critiquing, I’ll start listening and taking notes… But while you kooks battle on here about surfers you dream to surf like and whinge cause you got up at 1am to watch Kolohe do an air reverse, well… I’ll just sit back and watch!

Enjoy the upcoming rounds and make sure you catch up on your sleep… you are all so grumpy!

5.

give heitor a spot on dear suburbia!

I didn’t see the heat so I can’t really comment. Though I find it fairly unlikely that Julian surfed ‘safely’ – didn’t he get the score in the dying moments? and well, it’s just generally not his bag baby. There’s always going to be these ‘discrepancies’ though (and lets be honest, Jadson’s been on the beneficial swing of a couple in the past), not much can be done – thems just the breaks in a subjectively judged sport.

      3.

Jadsen won that heat hands down…he was scored ridiculously low vs comparable waves w no airs by Parko, Knox, and such. Julien’s air was weak and slow, yet ‘somehow’ just squeaked in at the score needed. Lame

    4.

    hell yeah…

      5.

      hell yeah jadson got robbed!
pretty face hoolian gets overscored… (again!)
      evan – robbed too!
cj – you’re supossed to surf like that movie Year Zero, mate! (what happened?)
kolohe – see ya next time kid (take notes from adam “ripping” melling)
aw kolohe – mike parsons and your whole SC crew cryed like babies!
jeremy, bretty, knox, alejo and adam – ripped yesterday. (period!)
aussies – still claiming after every single wave. (just watch and see!)
hector – that’s how ya put food on the table kids! (that is something you’ll never get in a losing heat from julians, wilkos, kolohes and shits!)
richie lovett – good to see him up and alive on the webcast (talking about real mans..)

    6.

I’m sorry, I dont think Jadson won that heat and I’m a Brazzo. Generally Brazzos are underscored, but I don’t think he was on that heat. And if you ask me, Heitor Alves is the underscore champion of the WT.

7.

I totally agree mate (from a jadson’s hater)

8.

to be honest, Evan got pretty underscored either, and I don’t normally talk about judging, personaly think they do a decent job…

9.

^ yes you are

10.

No, if “Style & Flow” are a criteria, then Jadson should never make a heat. He needs to up the volume of his boards & calm down a bit.

11.

Since when did Kolohe represent Brazil?! ha ha…

12.

Agree!
Evan got pretty underscored!
Jeremy and Kai Otton got huge scores for old rail work ( the marketing around Lowers is not about innovation?)
Jadson got underscored too…

One more day in judges life…

13.

brazillians are fucking whingers… every time i come to a site there is always some brazillian with a sob story about how hard done by they are… if you spent more time focusing in your surfing and supporting your stars and less time whinging and crying ‘poor me’ people may take notice….. have a glass onf concrete and harden up princess’s

16.

My two cents. Owen Wright miss times about 2 out of every 3 turns. Yesterday i was critical of J Flo, aces and spartans lack of ability in the air. Today i call out Pat G and Kolohe for lack of ability on the face. That finner of Kolohes is his only skill and half the time it is just plain ugly. John johns backhand besides getting pitted is hard to awkward. Julian needs to catch more waves to get through those shitty heats. Look at slater he always keeps busy in a heat. Parko isn’t looking like world champ material. Some of the surfers have walk through round three match ups.

    17.

And you can’t even surf anywhere near any of their levels surfnurse. Go kook it, Kook.

    18.

Nah Parko looks every bit the world champ

    19.

I’d miss time my turns too if i was cardio biking before each heat

20.

Why do people on Stab’s comments HATE surfing so much???

How can you be so negative towards something so sick..

Surfing in any form, conditions and style is awesome to watch.

    21.

Really? then go watch clips of Corky Carroll, or Big Wednesday, all while removing yourself from STAB

22.

the judges are so clueless. gabriel gets an 8.6 or whatever for 1 air yesterday, but patty gu can’t get more than a 9 with 4 back up turns?

23.

and owen, get back on the claws mate. you’ve looked lost ever since your artistic rainbow thing came out

24.

Everyone is soo negative. U guys always talk too much shit in here. Half of the people who comment in here cant do airs or get barrels. Less talk more surf and no bullshit

25.

surfnurse your a fucking idiot

26.

27.

I almost forgot, there will also be a new bud light domestic tour for kolohe and Conner so they can win something too. I love surfing. I just love it so much.

    28.

Ha ha! I hate you Spitball, but that is good shit!

29.

@STABMAG YOUR SLANG MAKES ME WANNA PUKE

30.

give heitor a spot on dear suburbia!

31.

STAB MAG IS A BUNCH OF SQUIRREL’S WHO LIVE IN BONDI CAN’T SURF AND RAMBLE ON WITH OVER SENSATIONALIZED VERBAL DIARRHEA,YOUR MAG IS AS SHIT AS THE KOOKS WHO RUN IT,DEREK RILEY,JED ETC

32.

Kolhole is the biggest beat up getting around so over hyped.

33.

blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
this shit is fucked

34.

Don’t normally comment on the comps, but Jadson was underscored on that 7.60, should have been 8+, changed the outcome of that heat…all commentators agreed.

Jules rips, ain’t his fault, judges got it wrong.

35.

Jadsen was way underscored, Kolohe is over matched and will be off the Tour, and I surf way better than all of you

    36.

anyone who gets on to forums and says they can surf better than everyone else… probably fucking cant.

37.

The Kolohe lost fair and square… jadson was harder to watch but in a heat based on the criteria… swooshed pretty boy jules. Contests are strange. The words criteria and surfing, don’t flow together in the same sentence.

38.

Can anyone recommend a good surfing website. It’s time to move on I think.

39.

cmon guys.. surfing is a form of art. it is meant to be subjective, making hard to judge.,the thing we love about it is what bring the ones we dont. can u understand? lets be thankful we have internet and can watch this amazing thing online.. theres not much else to be said.

    40.

You are a Donkey member Spitball. Yes, its about subjectivity in surfing, but NOT in judging. the whole idea is to get it so the scores are judged equally. That is why we have this ‘amazing thing online’, and it was based off incorporating high performance new school surfing with a universal judging criteria. Please return to you bong, your Piping Hot wetsuit, and your broke down VW bus.

    41.

well u cant really watch it online if you had to work since hurley cant get the fucking on demand thing working. anyone noticed how hurley has the shittiest, most-overhyped wildcards in every event they sponsor.

    42.

Yes there is, shut up spitball . Surfing is art, pff I’ve never even painted when I’ve been surfing,or sculpted for that matter and I’ve never seen anyone surfing in an art gallery you fag.

43.

It seems as if the judges scored Wilson’s last wave not only based on its criteria, but the whole breadth of Julian’s performance v Jadson…

However, that judgin ideal did not carry over for the Kolohe/Heitor heat later…Kolohe was clearly the form surfer, but lost to a single manure-ver…an ultimately not given the nod on his last wave, which very comparable to Julian’s last…

I thought Rabbit summarized it perfectly after…

The judging so far has to do with inconsistency, not friggin racism…

44.

Actually Barton Lynch summed it up perfectly with his ’2 turn 8 theory’…it held true til Jadsen’s heat, where he uncorked 2 monster hacks, and was rewarded with 6′s. Not racist maybe, but bullshit none the less.

45.

Ronnie Blakey is the best at the box, I mean, miles away from the others. awesome comp so far… Poor jadson

46.

people on the moon but no heats on demand !

47.

stop bein greeny fags…. if someone says someone like jadson sucks it doesnt mean he sucks at surfing in general ( he shreds) it just means that compared to the other 32 in the world he is nothing special, this is why no one ever hates on Dane cause hes just that cut above, so stop crying and tryin to say “well hes better than you” yeah we know this but if i were Craig Anderson id probably say nah he sucks……GET IT? ITS ALL RELATIVE!!

48.

Craig Anderson is a hippie clown, and Dane is a cut below…weak constitution, along with superior skill. Heitor pulls things Dane tries to in comps, Dane fails and runs away.

49.

I was going to say something about the CRIME that happened to Jadson, but there`s no need to… everybody saw it..
So, I`m going to say just one more thing: that almost PERFECT ride by Adam Melling (a 9.73), remember?
ok, now imagine that Kelly is the surfer riding it.
do you have any doubt it would be a 10?

    50.

You just said it, it was almost perfect. not perfect. it was clearly not a 10. I’m the only one who got robbed from a 10.

51.

I had the wave of the event

52.

“Hmm I might look up stab and see the backlash from the contest”… “Yep, crew have got issues with it!”…. Relax , enjoy. The judges are always gonna make a few mistakes, happens every comp.

53.

Bud, I liked you up at 38, now you are a small greasy turd. The STAB forums are about humor, vitriol, and tough love. If you do not like it, please go immediately to SURFER, where everything is mediated, everyone hugs each other, and gives soft kneading under the table. This is not a place for kittens and puppies, but of angry Pit Bulls, and road rash. Please join Spitball with his Patchoulie, incense, and leaf joints.

54.

Barton Lynch rules! Tells it like it is, has something to say.

55.
