The 2012 Hurley Pro, Lowers – day one

“I’ve got to be honest, I’m not surprised it was a slow one because I had Taylor Knox in my heat,” said Kelly after his heat at the Hurley Pro, Lowers today. “He’s had the most restarts ever at Trestles before for some reason. I wanted to win that first one because I haven’t been surfing that much lately. I surfed all day yesterday and I’m kind of tired today.” Kelly took yesterday to get his quiver dialled and, though he doesn’t usually have luck on quads at Lowers, he thinks this year might be different. “I’m looking for whatever everyone else is – just a fresh feeling and something that feels natural under your feet. I love the four-fins, but generally they don’t work that well at Lowers for me. I don’t know why that is, they tend to work better in hollower waves for me, but I rode a quad yesterday and it felt good so I’m sticking with it.”

It worked today, anyhow, since Kelly won his first round heat. Another round one heat win this morning went to Mick Fanning, currently leading the world title ratings. “The race is really tight,” said Mick. “With everyone counting a few good results and in a really good rhythm at the moment, Joel, Kelly, John John, Taj, you’ve got to just keep trying and just keep plugging away.” Mick’s also aware of his competition, and who to be worried about. “You’ve got to just look at track records and Kelly is probably the gnarliest guy, he just knows the wave so well. Then there are guys like John John, and Kolohe lives here and surfs amazing out here, so those are probably the main guys I look out for.”

One person Mick didn’t mention, but who was today’s standout, was Yadin Nicol. A 17.57 combined heat total is a good way to start an event. “It’s the first time I’ve won a Round one heat this year, so it feels good,” said Yades. “The waves are really fun and I’m just stoked to finally get on an open face. I started off pretty shaky, I slipped on that very first wave. I had a section on that next wave and thought I’d do a little air and Owen can get 8s and 9s in his sleep so on that last wave and I was just lucky to get it. This year hasn’t really been too kind to me and it was fun out there.”

Though the swell’s looking to fade tomorrow, you never can tell, so tune in here just in case.

haha, you must be new here

im a little undecided. If Taj scored a 9.17 for a decent turn, a tap off the lip and then a super quick full spin landing under the lip in a closeout, did Medina deserve the 8.63 for 1 slightly above average looking air to beat CJ on the buzzer? This is a genuine question as I thought Taj’s wave was 1.5-2pts better than Medinas. Any judges reading the Stab forums able to give some info on that?

And before anyone starts this isnt just because he is brazilian, i rate Medina as a surfer in all conditions and think he’ll claim a world title (maybe 2) before he is 25.

Bender, Taj’ s punt was really nice with that high speed full rotation, but he did a single grab and it was at the end of the wave. Gabriel’ s wave was bigger and he pulled a backside air reverse which is way more difficult than a frontside one, specially if you don’t grab the rail just like Medina did. Compare Medina’ s air with Pat G’ s one and you’ll realize that it was well judged. Cheers.

      10.

Thanks Jefferson, makes sense now youve put it that way.

      11.

BS. Taj’s air was the best of the event so far. I’d be shocked if it gets topped.

12.

The Hurley site has no Heats on Demand. What the ? This is basic shit.

13.

I should have won my heat! This is my fucking break!

14.

Is anyone else amazed that guys like Jeremy Flores, Ace, and Spartan can’t do airs?? Jeremy is only 24 and Slater is 40 something. Did he not have a tv and dvd when he was growing up?? Imagine a Crusty Demon that couldn’t backflip or a pro skater that couldn’t kickflip. Ps Really ordinary conditions at Lowers today considering what they have been free surfing in.

    15.

Some guys dont need to go to the air for points, 2 of the three you mentioned won their heats. And fanning can go to the air a little now, but he is the current world number 1 and hasnt needed an air game to get him there.

    16.

I am also surprised these guys don’t have an air game. But their rail/turn game is generally better than the “air” surfers.

17.

kolohe andino representing Australia now (aus) ok we willl take you but pull your finger out…

18.

CJ should have ran into Medina on two occasions to force the interference.

19.

gudang underscored again!!! do the judges hate him?

20.

gabs was way over scored for his backside 8.6 air reverse…kerzy did a wofty fronside roter and got a 6.5 and his was way more stylish and perfect

21.

Anyone that has seen Mick freesurf much or even just sees a lot of his heats knows he has a good air game, but his rail game is top 3 in the world. Haven’t seen Ace air much but he has one of, if not the best, traditional backhands in the world. Jeremy and Michel can do great airs, they just don’t do them in heats as much as their best surfing is usually done on the face/in the barrel.

22.

I hate this power surf thing…
really, fuck bourez, hobgoods and etc…
I don’t give a shit for their heats!

I wanna watch kolohe, JJ, Kelly, gabriel, owen and etc…
So if is fair or not medina score, I don’t give a shit!!!! I just wanna see CJ, Jeremy, Bourez and all off these dinosaurs surfers get the fuck out off it…

Lets the innovation and the airs show up…let these guys for contest like pipe and tahiti!

    23.

If all their other turns didn’t look like shit, I might agree…Yadin, Kolohe, Perrow, Gaudang, Owen all have f’d up styles. Better to watch Ace and Jeremy lay it on a legitimate rail too. I love the idea of a dinosaur in his early 20′s. Go watch an air show, or old Joe Crimo videos

    24.

dont watch then kook. Kelly has a fucking ridiculous rail game and has 11 world titles.

25.

Don’t cry CJ! You cry to much when loose…
Gentlemen rules? Save this for your tennis games on the weekend, you are paid to compete! To win! You are in the world tour!
Is because of guys like you that our sport still amateur if compared to skate, motocross and others. Guys like you that are act like girls when are competing… don’t like this? Go free surf, wow I see, no one wants to see a “rail-free surfer” I forgot, you don’t do any innovate turn…

    26.

    you are a fucking idiot.

27.

As i was saying.

CJ “i (simply) can’t handle the new school” Hobgood.

period.

    28.

    Go watch Year Zero idiot.

29.

where are you kolohe? your whole pack cryed! your pack learn how a real men goes? a lot of money doesn’t get you where you wan’t to be. you can’t win a fucking heat at the ct. you can’t win at your homebreak. swine flu?? THAT’S BULLSHIT! taj’s got a reo.
kolohe throws reo after reo after reo after reo. is just ugly. the kid is ugly. heitor fuck him up. what was that? that’s how you put food on the table kolohe. beeing a REAL MEN. get the fuck outta here kiddo. freesurf is a good option for ya. at least all the sponsor you got…

    30.

bro your hassling a guy who at 17 is mixing it up with the worlds best. who cares if he isnt winning, he’s 17 and will be one to watch in the years to come. yeah there is alot of hype over the kid, but if you were his sponsor wouldnt you push the hype to sell merch?

31.

Fuck you, I’ll shred you til’ sunrise, I’m ugly huh? you should see the girls I get! My career hasn’t taken off yet but you know what? i train everyday in the gym and surf everyday, Surfing isn’t fun! its a fucking high pressure job! I will win one day!

32.

whats up with all the brazilians posting…?
or are they just gramatically retarded 7 year olds

33.

Big on passion, not on education…

34.

Mick is top 3 in his rail game?!?! pff… Mick is the fucking text book of surfing… He is the number one spot. He doesnt bust as many airs, but when he does, its sublime… I cant fault him…. If you ever wana know how to do everything in surfing with style, grace, power, old school, new school what evs… kids, watch Mick Fanning…

35.

Agreed, IMO probably Parko and Mick at number one, followed by Kelly (rail surfing), I didn’t want to exaggerate to prove my point but it isn’t really an exaggeration it’s more of a fact I suppose…
