Surf couture on the blue carpet
20 Mar 2012New genre: Comedy fashion. It’s, like, that awkward Ricky Gervais humour that you can’t stand, but can’t look away from. In the best way possible! At the ASP Banquet, held on the Gold Coast before the Quiksilver Pro, Snapper Rocks every year, a select few surfers were gently accosted by some aspiring Fashion Police from Sea FM. Reckon they’ve ever received better answers to the question, “Who dressed you tonight?” Stab thinks not! Too bad Jules Wilson unknowingly beat Kelly Slater to the punch on that “my date dressed me” gag – the champ don’t dig being one-upped. Even more surprising, the absence of 2000-and-late’s hottest fashion accessory from Kelly’s ensemb; His pooch, Action.

Bet Smart
1 day agoAre you a betting man? Do you have sleepless nights when surf contests run on a different time zone to yours? Does your blood rush when y’have pennies on a man in clutch? Stab does too! Quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro, Rio start in a few hours’ time and this is how much each of the remaining competitors are paying over at TopSport.

Twiggy, between a Wok and a hard place
1 day agoYou’ve seen Warick ‘Wok’ Wright’s little video segments, right? Kinda like an abrasive, chauvinistic, South African Letterman. He’s totally ruthless. His latest conquest? Brave dog Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker. Watch, and perhaps you’ll giggle!
Sal’s winning sled
2 days agoAs you’ve no doubt heard by now, Sally Fitzgibbons won the gal’s Billabong Pro, Rio (her second win this year). And the board she did it on was a Hayden Shapes Psychedelic Germ, designed by Warren Smith – a board that against all odds and regardless of it’s radical shaping features, goes like a complete gem. Just ask Craig Anderson, who recently did one of the best backside air-reverses we’ve ever seen and ended up on the cover of Stab issue 57, out now.
Rio belongs to Sal
3 days agoSal Fitzgibbons has taken her second wimmin’s WT event this year after winning the Billabong Pro, Rio. She beat Hawaiian Coco Ho in the final, in pretty tough conditions. Sherm exhibits!
7 days agoPhotog to the stars and one of Stab‘s favourite lensmen, Steve Sherman, is having a gallery showing in Encinitas. It’s at style store UNIV and it’s called T-Sherms Now. “Since the late ’80s, Sherman’s trademark moody black and white photos have broken new ground in a field where bright, front-lit colour was the standard. Sherman’s surf star portraits and lifestyle photography explore uncharted realms of behind-the-scenes intimacy and journalistic presence, bringing fans closer to their surfing heroes than they ever thought possible.”
There’ll also be a swagger of Sherm’s new teos, (cleverly called T-Sherms) on show and f’sale. Be at 1053B South Coast Highway, in Encinitas, California at 6pm this friday if you’re close-by.
Kelly’s absence from Rio confirmed
8 days agoWe mentioned it yesterday, but it’s now been confirmed that Kelly Slater won’t be competing in the Billabong Pro, Rio due to a heel injury. “I injured the inside of my left heel in Java and then re-opened it again the following week at Cloudbreak,” Kelly Slater. “It became infected and I flew to Australia to get it treated and stitched in hopes of making it to Rio, if not for Round 1, at least for Round 2. I’ve been in the water since getting it stitched and while I can go straight, I can’t do turns at all right now so I’ll have to pull out of Rio. It’s unfortunate, but I’m just going to focus on healing up as soon as possible right now. Good luck to all the competitors in Brazil and I’ll be watching online.” Kelly is to be replaced by 26-year-old Brazilian Willian Cardoso.
Rio starts v. soon – without Kelly?
9 days agoThe Billabong Pro, Rio De Janeiro starts in two days’ time. The draw’s been finalised and, as you may’ve read in Stab‘s most recent news article, Dusty Payne ain’t on it. He’s being replaced by fellow Hawaiian Freddy Patacchia (who gave something of a schooling to some new guns at the Nike Lowers Pro recently). But, Dusty ain’t gonna be the only absentee: Kelly Slater, who recently sliced his heel and required stitches (as well as scooping some nice back grazes – see left), Tweeted this morning that he “can surf but can’t really turn on heel still. Stitches in foot. Likely won’t be in Brazil for the event. And it’s not April Fool’s day.” So, unless the contest holds off and the chance has time to heal, there’s a good chance he won’t be clocking 10′s at Barra da Tijuca.
Nathan Fletcher takes XXL awards, like he was always going to.
12 days agoLast night in Anaheim, all the brave dogs got together for Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards. Nathan Fletcher was the star of the show after a mind-blowing year in 2012. From big Fiji and Teahupoo to paddle sessions in Hawaiian outer reefs, Nate ruled the big wave scene. But last night it was all about the heaviest wave every ridden: his tow bomb from Teahupoo during the greatest WT layday of all time on August 27 in Tahiti. He took out ride of the year, the Monster tube award and the men’s performance champion. With his ol pal Bruce Irons by his side, Nate was excited about how he was feeling. “I feel like $50,000,” he said. “It feels awesome… I’m going to try to multiply it with good times.”
In other divisions, Dave Wassel won the paddle award for his mutant at Jaws, Garrett McNamara copped the biggest wave award for his left at Portugal along with wipeout of the year (at Jaws) while Maya Gabeira took out the laydeez big wave award.
