One Flew Into Jordy Smith’s Nest
A fairly normal telling of the grand opening at Mr Smith’s nightclub.
Cape Town is always a trip, more so if you’re a country bumpkin that lives out in the sticks near St Francis Bay. It’s busy, crowded and has those Uber and Mr Delivery essentials of city life.
An invite to the opening of a three-in-one nightspot in Cape Town is enough reason to head for the bright lights. But when that invite comes from Jordy Smith, then you chuck on those Winklepickers and join the boogie.
From a joint venture between Jordy, former big wave champion Grant Baker and their friend and business partner Reg Macdonald a nightclub was born.
Opening night was as huge as it gets in Cape Town, with everyone in the local surf community present, Jordy, his lovely wife and Reg hosted. Twiggy however, is currently in Hawaii and on standby for a possible big wave call.
The concept is #Surfhard, comprised of Surfarosa a surf punk influenced neighbourhood dive bar, Harringtons cocktail bar and boutique lounge, and District premier nightclub–all three spaces filled to capacity.
To cap off the night, Jordy presented his latest movie ‘Just Now’ filmed and directed by Dane Staples. It’s all big barrels, the mirrored excellence of Supertubes and Donkey Bay, aerial innovation, and patented power carves.
The film ended and live music spilled through the speakers courtesy of South African rocker Jack Parow. The guest threw back tequila shots and the party floated on well after the midnight hour.
“It was a whole lot of hard work,” said Jordy of the development of the nightclub. “Twig and Reg and I were in the thick of it from the start with serious planning and vision, and I’m just so stoked how it all worked out.”
As Jordy spoke, the bars were full, the dance floor pumped and the celebration was unavoidable. Big Thursday nights make for difficult Friday mornings.
