Six Surfers, Eight Artists, Six Aussie Towns
Watch: A Summer Sessions retrospective.
We surfed, we shot surfing, we got sunburnt, we watched live music, we partied, we drank an unhealthy amount of Summer Bright. It was a peek into the life on the road as a touring band, as thrilling as it was toxic for our livers. What a time it was! For three weeks we traversed the finest slice of Australia’s east coast with our band pals, Cub Sport and Middle Kids, Stab film-guy, Toby Cregan, the Life Without Andy gents and a bunch of talented surfers and friends who happened to be in town at the time and looking for a good time.
We cast off in Wollongong with Kalani Ball, sipping in the beer garden of the Towradgi Beach Hotel, bonding with our new muso friends. Next thing we know we’re all in Newcastle, at the classic alt-rock venue that is the Cambridge Hotel, Ryan Callinan was there, it was a full house, an exceptional way to sign off our first weekend together.
Bondi Beach was magic. Harry Bryant rolled into town with a foam lid, his entertaining sense of humour and an insatiable thirst. The Bucket List heaved, we moved on to the North Bondi Bowling Club, removed our shoes and drank into the late evening. Mitch Crews was in Coolangatta to meet us for the Sunday show. We were hazy, a little spent, but we pushed on – we had to make the most of an out-of-office Monday.
Week three was the tour’s crescendo. The Brewery show was a melter, thanks to a glorious day and fitting outdoor venue. Jack Lynch and Duncan McNichol joined, we threw a party afterwards at our Byron Bay accommodation and forfeited a portion of our bond. Not a lot, but enough to stir our accounts department (sorry!)… The Sunshine Beach Hotel on the Sunshine Coast made for the perfect final hoorah. The venue overlooked the beach and understandably hit capacity early. Together with Kai Hing, we literally drank the place dry of our beer of choice. Cub Sport saw out their last song, we celebrated, toasting together in the green room, then it was back to the hotel room to unwind accordingly.
