An Annual Celebration Of Surfboard Design Worth Attending
Live shaping, music, swap-meet, twin fin exhibition, film premier = party!
Have an appreciation for surfboard design? Looking for an excuse to indulge on your labour day long weekend? Bondi Beach is the place you need to be tomorrow. The Deus Surf Swap is back and they’ve got a lot planned for event number ten. For those unacquainted, the annual shindig is much more than the name suggest, celebrating art, music, good food and a ‘simple love for the history and provenance of old surfboards’.
Here’s exactly what’ll be going down at the Bondi Pavilion:
This year, the Sydney leg of this now world wide event is a chance to celebrate 10 years of Surf Swaps, and 10 years of Deus! We’ll be delving into some of the history and lore of the unique Australian surf scene, with characters from the past and present mixing to have a yarn and swap some old foam from the golden eras – with a focus on the humble twin fin.
- Pre-1990 vintage surfboards for sale on the ‘wall of joy’. Bring down your old boards and sell them.
- Live shaping in the Deus shipping container. Watch masters at work.
- Appraisals. Antiques roadshow style valuations.
- ‘Communing With Twin Fins- A surfboard exhibition celebrating the old & the new in the here & now”. Vintage and contemporary twin fins on display presented by Electric and The Board Collector
- Live bands (featuring The Jim Mitchells)
- Twin fin demo. Watch the pro’s surf some new and vintage twin fins.
- Great food.
- Retro skate comp. Enter and show us your 70’s street skating moves.
- Outdoor bar.
- Film clips and Q&A’s with some of Australia’s best shapers.
- Jye Byrnes will be taking up residence in the Sea Container, hand crafting a couple of his Bonzer and Single Fin signature shapes as ridden by Zye Norris in South To Sian. Jye will be on exhibition from inside our transportable shaping container throughout the day, plus guest appearances from Hayden Shapes and Morning of the Earth Surfboards
We also thought this might be a fine chance to premier our latest film, ‘Duel Dreams’ featuring Ozzie Wright, Craig Anderson and Ry Craike surfing a handful of old twin fins in the desert reefs of Western Australia.
