Nobody likes a blind date, especially one that lasts for three weeks.

So to allow us all to get further acquainted, a few weeks back we had the Summer Sessions headline duo, Cub Sport and Middle Kids, interview each other right here on StabFM. We thought of it as an effective ice-breaking activity before we all pile into a tour bus for the (free) six stop tour presented by Summer Bright Lager

Middle Kids took stage first, revealing everything from how they spend their downtime to the ideal snack selection for long stints on the road. Today we role-reverse, Middle Kids interview Cub Sport. Shall we begin?

Middle Kids: So, Cub Sport, tell us the story of how you came up with that name – that isn’t the actual story.
Cub Sport: We were on one of our many journeys to Israel when we met with a revered Shaman in Tel Aviv. He told us about the power of a name, and how what we call ourselves affects our lives. He explained that the path we were on led to darkness, poor ticket sales and possibly writers block. Seeing the look of obvious and bleak concern on our faces he assured us that we could avoid this.

“Change the energy around your name, you will change your life, and change your path.” If it won’t help, it won’t hurt, we thought. So when it came time, we chose the coolest name we’ve ever heard.

If you were going on an adventure to navigate unexplored parts of the world, what band or musician would you guys take with you, and why?
Cher, because mother knows best.

If you guys didn’t play the style of music you play, what kind of band would you be?
Shania Twain covers band.

It was cool meeting you guys at Bigsound last year. Tell us three things about the band that have changed since then.
We’ve started our own record label, Tim has gone nearly full diva frontman for the live shows and only plays guitar in a couple of songs now. We also went from being ¼ gay to ¾ gay – we’re still working on Dan!

Where do songs come from?
The same place as the internet, no one knows.

Just a handful of days ago, the band released their latest video, Chasin’. It’s a melancholic-tinged number, based around frontman Tim Nelson’s identity struggle and the pressures of a religious and highly conformist upbringing. The track is from their sophomore LP Bats, which dropped a handful of weeks back. If you’re of the type who enjoys a live performance sing-along, we suggest you head in that direction for preparation.

But wait there’s more! In the spirit of our east coast adventure, the band handed Stab a digital mixtape, something to set the mood, something to fuse our bond. Hit the triangle above for summer warm-ups featuring everyone from CHIC to Cloud Control, Arcade Fire and Mariah Carey(!).

Now, we’ve given you plenty of warning for the upcoming free shows and we accept no responsibility for those forced to stand at the back with their chins embedded in the backs of individuals of excessive height. So we’ll say it again – arrive early!
