The Occ-Cast: Dave Rastovich, A Life Off Tour
“You know what, f**k that! I don’t want to do that.”
Dave “Rasta” Rastovich has one game and that’s to do his own thing. Based on the Northern NSW coast, Rasta has spent his time away from professional surfing – since transitioning into an ambassador role at Patagonia – being cucumber cool.
Like Tom Curren and celestial constellations, Dave’s an enigma. Dane Reynold’s when interviewed by Stab on the subject of power surfing explained Rasta’s lines and turns in astonishment. Occy tells Dave, sans embellishment, that he’s one of the best “free surfers” in the world. We’d give him creds for one of the best surfers in the world, because, well, “free surfing” shouldn’t exist. Ever heard someone say they’re going for a “free surf?”
Rasta and Occy (a man that understands the toll of life in a singlet) discuss the pitfalls of competitive surfing. Rasta goes on to explain, “One of the things that weirded me out about contests was if I lost, I’d come home and be bummed… I just thought you know what, fuck that! I don’t want to do that”.
Today, ole David remains appreciative to his ole family, the brand that supported him for 20 years, “I really owe a lot to Billabong, they looked after me,” and the latest Ep is a testament said relationship. Hit play.
