Old School Is Surfing’s Modern Illusion
Jared Mel pulls the meaning retro from retro on a nine foot single.
Thanks to the work of Joel Tudor – the fucker that made longboarding cool – alt boards are a way of life rather than a dirty pastime. They’re fun to ride and probs sexier than a tuned-up 6’0 blade under your arm. That is, if you can work the rails, step back and swing that single (duo, twin or quad) fin around. High-performance surfing’s no longer paper-thin thrusters, bunny hops, and three to the beach. If it works, goes fast, highlines and shoots through the flat sections, in our opinion, it performs. Will there be a time when, say, we watch Jared Mel ride backwards, facing into a small barrel at Canggu (as seen in this highlight reel from Dues Ex 9-foot and single event), and instead long for a kid throwing an air reverse to the flats in knee-high shorebreak?
