Filipe Toledo, Flawless At The North Shore’s High Performance Epicentre
Handing out barrels like puppies from a windowless van.
Oh, Rocky Point! When you weave through the hordes of pros and the overwhelming amount of Brazilian aerialists, what you get is the North Shore’s most rippable wave. The inside section of the righthander is eerily shallow, fit for a dragging across if you choose to follow a tunnel into the opposite foam ball. Fortunately, the rocks are soft (well, for rock standards) and flat, and won’t tear you apart the way Indo’s reefs will (more cat scratch than lion claw). The only trouble is once you get your bearings, and stand up you’re in shin high water, if it’s head-high plus you’re faced with the unfortunate prospect of keeping your footing and jumping over, starfishing, or just accepting your hopelessness, the possible fate of your fins and dig back out into the lineup. Here’s one session of Filipe decimating the miracle’s favourite playground; while generously inciting envy for anyone who’s about to paddle out in meagre surf wrapped in rubber.
