Santa Cruz legend found dead
Posted 15 Jun 2012, by STABmagSanta Cruz big-wave surfer and switch-foot pioneer, Jeff Spencer has been found dead. Spencer was part of a powerhouse group of Santa Cruz surfers in the 1980s that included Richard Schmidt, Vince Collier and Anthony Ruffo. Like several of his Santa Cruz contemporaries, Spencer also battled substance abuse and addiction problems. A coroners report is investigating what led to his death.
ruffo’s a lowlife meth-dealin’ pedophile. collier’s a violent, neanderthal sociopath who can’t count to ten. skin dog’s a really annoying twat, and flea’s just a tiny lil’ dickhead himself–though apparently he’s saving the world in rehab. the westside guys are f-ing dirtbags. if people like them are “cool as shit,” i guess you meant you really like poop? it’s always sad to see so much talent wasted, but i’ve grown tired of all the mythologizing when it comes to those westside assholes. they’re not heroes. they’re not legends. they’re barely decent people. you give respect to the “cultural heritage” they built? is that a joke? the only cultural heritage the westside created is a long and loathsome line of assholes, a three-generation legacy of complete shitheads. the westsiders beat the crap out of “trannies” (and each other, too!). they also enjoy pretending to be watsonville gangbangers. they fuck underage girls, and they blow dirty coke like it’s sinus medicine. there’s a reason why people in far reaches of the world generally don’t care for santa cruz surfers. (sorry, boys. it’s true). and there’s a reason why 99% of the surfers in santa cruz never amount to shit. the place is a black hole, due in no small part to men like collier and ruffo. i know this because i am from that black hole, but i had the good sense to go live elsewhere. so, with all due respect to mr. spencer, may he rest in peace, and may his demons be done, these guys don’t deserve anyone’s respect.
AI was a dick, and a drug addict. Go ask the staff at Tavarua, or people who worked for his sponsors that had to deal with him. Legend? Absolutely. Good role model? No frickin way…unless you are a surfer who wants to absolutely kill it. The surf media will selectively pull out people to prop up (read: if it benefits them to be in the Islands), and rip others with the same problems (David Eggers, Davo, etc). Only ONE article was ever written about AI’s massive drug problem, and that was so controversial it was ridiculous. Bruce, Koby, Nathan Fletcher..guys so hyped its absurd, but the party train rolls on, while the Industry types line up to give BJ’s. Hypocritical tug jobs, that really don’t care about the people, but just want to be part of the hype and glow. Bobby Martinez was spot on about the whole package.
Hey Mr. Taffy – you can lick my Taffy and stick your bible thumping rhetoric
right up your lilly white and tight a hole. You little wanking, preachy, twat !
What happens when you’re back on land? Self control.
I love it when wankers drop Andy’s name into their
anti drug or anti anything speech, using him,
and comparing him to one addict or another.
Its always so tempting … such a powerful name,
using it somehow gives your pathetic thought
so much more power. It props up
your own small existence.
Andy lived his life his way …. now he is gone.
He is a Hawaiin and an American Surfing icon.
A son, brother, husband and father who loved
and is loved.
You’re so out of line … and full of ego,
you don’t understand a word of this do you ?
Did you know Andy ? Do you really know anything
about him other than what you fuckin read ?
You disrespect his name and yourself.
Screw You, jerk off – kooks.
Usa surfing is in a very dangerous spot righ now. Drugs are taking more and more a huge role in America’s surfing comunity. If even their ‘idols’ are drug adicts, can you imagine the average kds growing in this enviroment? Too sad. Hope this reality change!
Everyone self-medicates in one way or another trying to balance their own chemical soup inside of them. Surfers are no exception, I was one and wrote a book about it at naturerulesok(dot)com. Surfing is a dopamine high. But what happens when you are back on land?

Spenny was a classic! At one time seeming barely literate and incoherent, and then saying the funniest and insightful tid bit the next moment. Drugs took his generation down hard, with many of the Westside’s standouts from the 80′s succumbing, or fading into addled obscurity. No joke, he was one of the best swithfoots ever, able to go frontside or backside every direction and surf good. Good or bad, surfing misses its legends and characters whose presences are as dependable as wind and tide. RIP.
There are guys you grow up with, that are both inspirational, and intimidating. ‘The Boys’, but you don’t really want to BE them, but you do want to be as cool as them. In the 80′s, when localism was at its peak, there were surfers like Spencer that were glowering and rough, but cool to the kids once you proved you belonged in the pack. Surfers were rebels, drug dealers, outcasts, and cool as shit. Waves of coke, crack, heroin, and later meth put many of the best to premature dirt naps. Names like Ruffo, Vince Collier, Arthur Deans, and Spenny ruled the Westside, spawning a generation of visible pros from Barney to Skin Dog to Rat, who in turn influenced the World. Hard to watch the decent over the last decade, but respects to one of the roots of a surf Town’s cultural heritage.

Good sense, or got booted out of Town with your tail between your legs? That said, I have to agree that there is too much mythology laced into everyone form Michael Peterson, to the Westside. In surfing you cannot even come close to arguing their impact…if you do you are just a plain idiot. Outside of surfing, you are spot on: A-holes, drug addicts, polluters of way too underage girls, etc. As a kid you look at these guys and go “wow!”, and hopefully as an adult you are smart enough to look at them and go “I am SOOOO glad I did not become them”. I think the point of the above is that there is a sort of awe as a did to looking up to the top guys in your Hometown, and if you have halfway decent parenting you will become one of the best yourself without succumbing to the scene. Further I think the point is to not talk Ill of someone that died, but give respect to his influence in whatever small way was positive. Truth be told, most Santa Cruz surfers don’t amount to much, but also true that the whole World knows who alot of them are. Most people that ‘had the good sense to live elsewhere’ translates into ‘traumatized and moved’ or ‘I was an addict and loser myself so I had to go elsewhere to get clean’. Santa Cruz IS a black hole, dressed up like a pretty sick place to be a surfer. For many growing up in the scene, you only wanted to earn your way into the crew. Lot of what you said is spot on truth, but behind that rant is a whole truckload of issues and baggage. Hope you worked em out by having the good sense to move.
Arthur Deans is dead in his 40′s, Ruff is in Jail for a year, VC is insane living up in the woods, and Spenny was found dead on the Cliffs. If I’m not mistaken, Josh Kerr gives props to Rat in the latest clip he made.
Comment No 6. That was pure gold. Drug users don’t deserve to be looked up to as heroes. Look at how everybody makes the late A.I out to be a hero. He was weak and he couldn’t overcome his addictions and he paid the ultimate price for it. That doesn’t make him a hero. People should be honest about the situation and say to the kids…..This is what can happen when you abuse drugs. The media shouldn’t be making out dead drug users are ‘cool’ as it gives yourh a bad impression.
Don’t try to compare it. AI was (and is) loved because he was the ultimate anti-hero to KS.
He lived that way, he died that way. He was the total opposite to Slater and in a time of dominance, it felt great.
These SC junkies are just what they are… good surfers(not great) addicted to drugs.

Anyone that takes drugs is a looser. Anyone that takes drugs and kills themselves doing it is taking the gift of life for granted and will therefore be damned to an eternity in hell.
Drugs are bad mmmm k
After old mate got out of rehab he was a jittery bottom rung surfer on par with KP or tiago. The bong cashed in big selling memorabilia. Much more profitable than paying out a washed up ex champ to keep twitching around on tour. Their marketing team and their little bitches the surf media did a great job giving him a kurt corbain like false god image for the masses to remember him by.
The people should know.DRUGS ARE BAD.STAY IN SCHOOL. um don’t do drugs drugs are bad mmm k
i bet your no angel spanna

Well put “wake up” ,i can vouch for this poview point.
At being said AI will always be and has always been my favorite.
RIP AI
My condolences to Spence’s friends and family. He was a great surfer, and his worth to us should be measured by everything good, not anything less, or other than that. None of us is a pure white cloth. I’m said to hear of Arthur Dean’s passing too. Seems like I saw him on the East Side only a few months ago. Another charger gone. Peace Dean-o. BTW: The comments here about Andy Irons are off base. Men are measured by the friends they can count, and for sure Andy is missed and mourned by thousands. Andy was a world changing talent. It takes a diffent kind of person to do that, so don’t try and measure him by your 6″ ruler. When you or I pass, my friends, the world will likely hardly notice. I am still bummed by Andy’s death, and I never even had the good fortune of seeing him in person. No one else in my lifetime has had that effect.
BTW: There are many great surfers in Santa Cruz who have made a positive impact, and have their act together: The O’Neill family, Doug Haut, Bob Pearson and his extended family, Ward Coffey family, Bud & Amy Miller family, Randy French, Vince Broglio, Richard Schmidt, Peter Mel and family, Tom Powers, the Wormhouts, Matt Micuda, Marc Tinkess, Mark Machado, Tim Ward, Anthony Tashnik, Laura (gerat East Side surfer and nurse), and many great young surfers I can’t think of off-hand, the list goes on and on. Sure there’s drugs there, and drugs destroy, but most people grow up. And so has the surf industry, over-all. Kelly has changed allot of minds regarding the kind of preparation it takes to become a Pro… You can see it in the new crew like Kolohe, and John John, etc. These kids are fit, and intelligent. I think the future is bright in Santa Cruz, and everywhere. The drug thing has been exposed for what it is. Fitness and Yoga are the new drug, and it’s a healthy one. You can party hard on life itself…
