Sal Masekela’s Top Five

Y’ever been on the Gold Coast during the Quiksilver Pro? It’s quite a scene. The flash and trash of Coolangatta sprinkled with pros and a ton of surf industry folk makes for a rotten energy that Stab can’t resist. Every year, we find ourselves hosting a party and every year we say it’s the last. This year was no different. Nike, wanting to celebrate their sophisticated view of our sport, desired festivity. Stab facilitated. Nike’s team of experts in the most exciting sport of all came wild for kicks and we totally supplied! They stood poolside and ate freshly-shucked oysters.

So, with that many interesting cats in one place, we figured we’d hang paper from a wall and have them write down their top five most-played, making a cool addition to the party’s aesthetic in the process. This is the second of those, belonging to Sal Masekela. It’s about as eclectic as one could imagine. Stab loves! You might even notice a tune on the list by Sal’s incredible father, Hugh Masekela, who y’should most certainly look up.

Who the F is this Sal Masekela guy?

2.

If you think that a guy is interesting because:
1) he is better than the worst
2) he seems to be everywhere (not sure it’s a good sign)
3) he is “super positive”

Then you sure are one of those usual attendants at the “lifewithoutandy” parties…

why didn’t he pick the band ONE DIRECTION .. there song you don’t know you’re beautiful …. its awesome. baby, you light up my world like its .. nah.0 nah nah .. .you don’t know you’re beautiful

Bitches…Chill. First off, Sal is hands down one of the best commentators. He gives good detailed analysis and is always worth listening to in the booth with Snips, Slater, Stansfield, etc… I’ve listened to some really bad webcasts and he just does a better job. If you don’t know who he is you must be living under a rock. The dude seems to appear everywhere. BTW, the dude is chilled and super positive, so let’s not be such a bunch of clams over this…

Basically, the guy is paid to pose, smiling, in front of walls with graffiti.

“eclectic” my ass… its gay, sterile and fkn trite. Nothing new or great about it. With the exception of Hugh Masekela… who I dont want to write off coz I’ve never heard… but the other shit is lame. Try looking a little further than what’s shoved in your face on mainstream tv.

Who? Exactly. Just another goon, who’s so goon, he don’t even know he’s a goon. Try watching him commentate street league skateboarding, worse than his attempts at commentating on pro surfing. I don’t understand how irrelevant people to partiuclar subjects choc nose their way into these public positions…and publications like Stab lap him up, that’s what i dont get, Stab is usually pretty tight.

You’ve got to hear Sal’s new album on iTunes. Alekesam is the band name (get it? Masekela backwards) and the album is The Sound of Alekesam. It’s really good.

Sorry Doug, reality is that you are tripping son. Apologise for the hate, but i’m just pointing out the truth and the truth hurts.

Hugh Masekela- Don’t go loose it baby.

Faith No More covered Niggas in Paris at their Hammersmith London show the other week. I’d never heard of it before. And I don’t know why they did it. The song is absolute junk. Id suggest that’s probably why…Hugh Masakel at tune is dencent
