Rookie romps in Round Two

Julian Wilson (AUS), 23, ASP Dream Tour sophomore and current ASP World No. 11, quickly found a rhythm in the Cloudbreak lineup this morning, earning a 9.47 and 9.10 for two lengthy backhand barrels to eliminate Patrick Gudauskas (USA), 26, in a one-sided affair while earning the highest heat total of Volcom Fiji Pro competition, 18.57 out of 20.

“Conditions are really good today,” Wilson said. “It’s pretty perfect. I had a crappy time yesterday and was really frustrated. It felt good to have that good start. My first wave was good and then I backed it up with another one. It felt great to have a couple of scores and to get that heat under the belt.”

Although 2012 marks Wilson’s inaugural trip to the Fijian islands, the young Australian exhibited little inexperience in the open ocean lineup today.

“It was only my fourth surf out there and I’m getting to know it better,” Wilson said. “I can’t believe I haven’t been here before. I’m getting a hard time from the boys because I’m such a rookie here. The people are amazing on both of the islands. The weather is great, the waves are great and I’m having a good time.”

Wilson will face Miguel Pupo (BRA), 20, when Volcom Fiji Pro competition resumes.

Gabriel Medina (BRA), 18, secured the event’s first Perfect 10 this afternoon for an incredibly long forehand barrel punctuated by some solid turns. Medina built upon this opening ride’s momentum to secure the Round 2 win over fellow rookie Yadin Nicol (AUS), 26, and advance directly to Round 3.

“That was sick,” Medina said. “I’m stoked to get that 10 and make the heat. I’m having a lot of fun. I didn’t know I was going to make it on that one and I just went for it. This is my second time to Fiji and I heard there is a swell coming. I think it would be fun if they ran at Restaurants too.”

Medina will face fellow Brazilian Alejo Muniz (BRA), 22, in Round 3 of competition.

Josh Kerr (AUS), 28, suffered a suspected grade-2 ankle tear in his opening Volcom Fiji Pro heat yesterday, but withstood the pain this morning to claim a Round 2 victory over veteran campaigner Taylor Knox (USA), 41, to advance to Round 3.

“I was worried because the doctor told me my ankle recovery was 8 to 12 weeks out,” Kerr said. “It feels super tender and I’m having non-stop work done. It’s really taped up and I don’t have much mobility with it at the moment. I got bounced up in the barrel and that didn’t feel very good, but I’m happy to get through that one.”

Tiago Pires (PRT), 32, veteran ASP World Championship Tour campaigner, survived a hard-fought heat over rookie sensation Kolohe Andino (USA), 18, this afternoon. Following a restart due to inconsistent swell, the two surfers attempted to battle the rapidly-changing conditions with Pires ousting the young Californian and advancing through to Round 3.

“I thought it was going to be a fun heat between Kolohe (Andino) and I but we had the restart and no sets came and then that wind came and changed the look of the wave,” Pires said. “I feel bad for Kolohe. No one likes to lose in these types of conditions. I’m happy to make the heat though. I had a tough loss to Owen (Wright) yesterday and I’m happy to keep going in this amazing event.”

Pires has drawn two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS), 31, in Round 3 of competition.

Kelly Slater (USA), 40, reigning 11-time ASP World Champion, rebounded from an uncharacteristic Round 1 loss yesterday to post a convincing Round 2 win over local wildcard Isei Tokovu (FIJ). While the scores didn’t necessarily reflect it, Slater admitted that Tokovu had the talent and opportunity to mix it up with the world’s best at Cloudbreak.

“It feels mellow out there and all of a sudden a 6-foot bomb comes through,” Slater said. “Isei (Tokovu) would have got a 10 on that bomb, but it was just a little too fast. There’s still a lot of energy out there, but it’s still a little slow. You can’t underestimate a local guy in these contests, they surf here all the time and know which ones are the best waves.”

Slater, who was forced to withdraw from the previous ASP WCT event in Rio de Janeiro due to a laceration to his foot, has been battling a Fijian stomach flu and is hoping to be in top shape for the latter rounds of competition.

“I’m feeling not quite 100 percent, I didn’t feel great yesterday and my legs were still a little shaky,” Slater said. “It’s no excuse for the Round 1 heat because Mitch (Coleborn) was totally in tune and just schooled us out there. It’s just about catching the best waves. I think we’ll have a few lay days and then there’s going to be a giant swell. My foot is better and when the swell kicks, in I have some big boards in the 7’6” to 8’6” range ready for it.”

can we have a bit of parenting for that Andino kid.

2.

Of course, and if he does that, you’ll say his style is ugly, or he claimed too much…
The kid is 18, he is at the start of his pro career, does not have a lot of experience in huge sweel (never said otherwise, though). But for sure you’d like him to score 12 ft waves as if he was 30 and fully expoerienced in big waves.
He is in full learning mode, he is already really good in small and medium waves, and needs to improve in big swell, but for sure you’ll be surprise by his abilities…

How many guys on tour would get a 10 in a 12 ft waves? I understand you don’t like the kid, I don’t want to know why, but you should get used to see him around.

3.

fuck off tiago you annoying cunt

4.

Medina wants to run it at Restaurants… but I want to see him catch a 12ft bomb and get a 10.

5.

Rookie sensation Kolohe Andino? Wouldn’t the term “rookie sensation” best be used to describe a surfer who is making heats? Two 13th’s and two 25th’s, um, yeah.

    hahahahaha
you hater! you hate brazilians, hate 10 point ride waves, hate 18 years old kid, that can dominated 4 ft trestles and get 10 barreling in fiji…

    hahahahahaha hater!!!!!

    4.

    suck that!!!!! Racist hahahahaha

      5.

Nao sou racista Tiago – I like kid and think that he has a bright future, a really good style and I hope he flies your flag for a long time. But I would like to see him surf some waves of consequence that’s all – I want to be entertained.

        6.

tipo num dos pipemasters maiores de sempre e ficar em terceiro? com 17 anos? onde e q tu tavas com 17 anos? australia? racista.

9.

By his seventh 25th placing his performance will be labeled” unprecedented”. Koho is well on his way to “earning” rookie of the year. Good to see Julia man up and show some potential for once. Probably drop the ball against puppy though.

If Freddy (the second most boring surfer on tour) patachia can have one of his rare solid heats and beat slater in macking cloudbreak the kings campaign will come off the rails. This is his chance to make a bit of history as the man who upset 12 in ’12

In the same vein, coleborn has a chance to change the title race by upsetting Joel’s rhythm.

If those two upsets occur and john Florence is on his game it could be round three Fiji is meaningful. One can only hope..

10.

A 18 years old kid, getting 10 barreling!!!!
AND THE RACISTS AUSTRALIANS GO CRAZY!!!!!!
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    11.

not racist. we want to see him surf decent waves of consequence. just as we do with all ‘high performance beach break’ rookies. last year julian stepped up and got a few solid ones at chopes. he seems to struggle with the competition mentally though, which always seems to be his undoing. i have no doubt gabs will deliver if it gets bigger. it was definitely interesting to watch kolohe way out of his depth in this event, he needs to work on his bigger wave game for sure.

      12.

medina got 5th in one of the biggest pipe masters ever at 17. Racist.

      13.

      yeah, you have no doubt.
well, you are another sideline dipsh1t yapping….
when the camera rolls on you, you prob can’t even bring your board 1/2 way up the wave… troll kook.

    14.

    youre a fucking idiot.

      15.

try asserting yourself somewhere in the world beyond an internet forum.
low life loser…didn’t get noticed yet? prob cause you are unaccomplished in the real life.
      keep trolling kook…
      carry on.

16.

Andino has trouble finding rythm, but the kid is really good, even though he had bad results on the WT so far. Last year, in less than three months, he won more contests than Dane Reynolds would ever dream of winning. The kid is ready and able to evolve, just like Medina.
This is the end for Fanning, Parkinson and friends. They’re getting old for sure, and the new wave is coming. That’s great, I was fed up with Kieren Perrow, Chris Davidson and other old and burned aussies. Freddy P is really good, and won’t be as boring as Adrian Buchan or Kieren Perrow.
Mitch Coleborm will disappear in the next round. Too bad, though, I’d like him to get us rid of Parkinson.

17.

fuck off tiago you annoying cunt

    18.

hey clown, put my d!ck down your throat. .. let me feel your complaints as you speak

      19.

andino, adriano, what’s the difference? a vowel, consonants…. one claims like a clown, the other hits his board…

20.

Now what haters?

21.

Yes, do fuck off Tiago.
Over using the race card for shock value is more annoying than your incessant laughter.

22.

the photo captions are wrong on the photos, Wilko los and didn’t advance from round 2.

23.

For all of you brazilians:

http://02ff4cc.netsolhost.com/blog1/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/20111018-220917.jpg

still wondering why the rest of the world doesn’t like you?

    24.

the rest of the world? shut the fuck up dickhead. white trash pale skin pussy. adriano acts like that because of you beer bong mustache rednecks. he’s trying to fuck with your boring horse minds. idiots.

      25.

      that was intense philosophy
can you swallow my dick when you have a moment?

26.

Dick, you forgot head. Speak for yourself or for some seppo’s and aussie’s. One big claimer cannot stain a whole country. I don’t think U have ball’s to say it to any of then far from your home.

27.

I am brazilian and I do hate most of the brazilians. Fucking arrogant/brainless people.
Mineiro sucks, jadson sucks even more, Alejo is ok and Heitor is a cool guy… And Medina is a freak, we got to give that

    28.

paneleiro, boiola a dar o cu aos gringos para se sentir importante.

29.

and hate most surfers. Egoistic people.

30.

men behind keyboards means boys face to face
racism is never acceptable, so shut the f@ck up

31.

No line about Chloe?

    32.

chloe andino is the ugliest of the bunch… huge hips, no t1ts

33.

Sponsors would be pissed, I guess?

34.

Who had priority in that heat at the end when alejo got a 6 at the very end. Didn’t Kolohe have priority? If so, why didn’t he go?

35.

What are U at, Dirk/must be good. Chloe didn’t share the line up with Alejo (rd one H. Alves x J. Wilson x KLo, rd 2 the portuguese tiger T Pires. But I guess his hand hurts now. Injury update anyone?

    36.

YO Dirkhead, Sorry I meant Tiago. So Tiago squeaked a last second wave and got a 6, which was all CrabLohe needed to win the heat. The commentators didn’t know who had priority. I was wondering if the Target Team Rider could have taken that wave if he wasn’t busy smashing his free surfboard. Thoughts?

    37.

not really, chloe gets shaved by parsons …. his waxing and sweet feelings are propogated by foo’s old budy

    38.

chloe is the ugliest…. kim on the other hand…

39.

Barreldodger smashs his board at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNrvpJikw40

40.

given that he made no real strategy change during the heat , it would of been more appropriate if Andino had punched himself in the head . Unfortunately this corporate driven mold of surfer could be here to stay . with such brands as Target and Nike who have zero history in surfing culture we are seeing the first tennis brat style surfers appear .

41.

did you see Gabs try and sneak a jetski assist in Rio? And complain about it? he knows the rules (so does his dad who was wigging out on the beach). What a sneaky cheat – no honour.. )-:

42.

hey what is this racist thing?
I didnot see it in my day, we surfed for the magic feeling, all brothers/sisters once.
Get a grip U fuckwhits
Only one life.

43.

YO Rob, you can be a brazilian, but you are an ass-kisser one. A real brazilian know our good and bad things. You probably live in Australia, under employed, doing shits aussies don’t wanna do. Maybe washing dishes for those drunk, lazy and loud aussies… Kissing asses on the Goldie just to catch a wave… Are you like them already, regarding sex? Because I had my fair share of aussie girls and they complain a lot about australians (“they are to lazy and come to fast…”) hahaha. Go get a life by yourself, fake gringo. You can be low profile, polite in the line up, but being proud of your origins and nationality. That way you could show that most of this crap they say is prejudice. You idiot. I wish I had a chance to meet you and teach some good manners. Ass kisser…

44.

YO Robby, since you don’t surf and don’t understand the meanings of this culture. when you get the fuck outta here don’t forget to listen to some midnight oil too. that’s their music man, the only good music they got..

    45.

can you name a single band that has come out of brazil? Actually are Sepultura Brazilian? we have the greatest rock band of all time – ACDC..

you brazilians just cant give up hey? you call the australians racist and go on and on about it. but all we say is most of your surfers have a poo stance. nothing racial about it. you guys are the racist ones, and if you hate Australia so much, why are there so many of you here????

46.

Hate sucks! Sometimes I give up reading cause it is so much shit I can´t believe. Let them compete and decide who is better. Doesn´t matter if Adriano claims a lot and doesn´t matter if Parko has a look of superiority in his face. In the end, this guys are having so much fun earning money doing what everybody here would like to do and you guys waste your time (and mine) writting awfull things and arguing about things with no sense. Go surf and relax!!

    47.

look i pull out my d!ck on occasions and jerk it in the line up… guys look at me like wff.. its natural, take out your d1ck and jack it…
    stop being a mangina

48.

“we have the greatest rock band of all time – ACDC..”

Phil Rudd is the only aussie in ACDC…They’re much more from Scotland!

Mmmh, thank to ACDC, because bside them? I’d say the Saints, but nobody listen to the Saints anymore, I guess…But Australia is much known for being the ountry of Kylie Minogue, Men at work, INXS and Midnight Oil…You shouldn’t be that proud of it, sonny…
Australia is not gifted when it comes to art. The only interesting things are made by indigenous australians.

49.

Of course the rookies win at first it is the same in every sport until their weaknesses are revealed then it is over. for a while. The tour does have a bunch of great rookies plus jordy, wiklo, julian, etc. And of course the pros of whom one will almost certainly win. Julian Wilson I hope will cut it loose. or Owen Wright.
