Rockaway locals burned by ‘hipsters’
Posted 08 Oct 2012, by STABmagEither directly or indirectly due to Saturdays Surf NYC, riding waves is hot in New York. Ain’t no better look than a layer of rubber and a twin-keel under the arm, right? Problem is, veteran Rockaway locals are furious about the influx of inexperienced ‘hipster’ surfers dropping in. During hurricane season, 90th has been the scene of much burning, thanks to late-to-the-gamers who haven’t grown up with surfing’s most important rule: if someone’s on a wave on your inside, don’t take off.
“It’s ridiculous,” Rockaway long-boarder Richard Livsey told NY Daily News. “The hipsters go out there and take waves from people who can actually surf. If they did that in Puerto Rico or Hawaii they would get beaten up. I’ve never seen it like this. If they came here and respected the culture it would be one thing, but they disregard the Number one rule in surfing: They drop in on you.”
Ryan Hefner, of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, who’s been surfing for two years, told Daily News that “That’s a classic surfer debate. No one wants their local spot over-run. At the same time it’s tough because it’s public space.”
But, best of all, is writer Henrick Karoliszyn’s lead-in: “The Endless Summer is turning into the Endless Bummer for veteran Rockaway surfers.”

Rockaway local Livsey – who moved to Rockaway 3 years ago, purchased a ‘Rockaway local’ shirt, doesn’t drop in but paddles back inside everyone after every wave, shuffles back and forth across the middle of his board, goes left on right-handers, can only surf on his forehand and talks loudly about his latest out of town trip – echoes the sentiments of his Australian (particularly Bondi) brethren. “I mean, I work hard to continually paddle inside everyone and wiggle my 11 footer to the beach. I’ve blogged my friends in the Bondi Malibu club (who also have t-shirts) and they do the same. These fucking hipster cunts are ruining it for me, cause yeah”.
in related news, lawyers representing the burned rockaway locals have sent alex knost a cease and desist letter, as well as a temporary restraining order against non locals with ironic mustaches and tight pants.
Public space says the Willyburg hipster?? So is the space 10 yards in front of my car when I’m rolling down the road. Does that mean it’s ok to pull out in front of me?? Fuckwit.
If in PR and HI they get beaten up for dropping in, then why don’t Rockaway locals do something along those lines instead of complaining…? Is it time for NYC to have a surf gang?!
Saturdays is not a surf shop. It’s a coffee shop that has four surfboards in the store and sells sixty dollar t-shirts to idiots.

The reality is there are people that can’t surf well and those who have no clue what they are doing. x + y = clusterf@ck
NYPD have stands up and down the beaches. they patrol all day long regulate and get locked up. Not worth it. It used to be the tough neighborhood that kept people away, now that area has been usurped by midland americans.

HAHAHA this comment couldnt be more spot on.
I’m just curious who these locals are cause I’ve literally never had or seen a problem with anyone out there. Most of the guys I’ve met out there who are actually from Rockaway or nearby in Queens are like “damn bro you’re so lucky you grew up doing this your whole life. I just started about a year or two ago. We had it right here but we just didn’t know” I’d guess that the “locals” are transplants who have been surfing it a little longer then most people, which I understand cause I get bummed on the crowd sometimes too. But growing up in a lineup full of transplants taught me humility
Hipsters and Surfing dont mix. Thank you.

all other surfers kind of suck. only ones i like are a couple of friends from highschool and my brother. fuck the rest of you. SUPs and Hipsters and Jocks and Pros and Fuckheads and Derilicts, and Brazilians and Canadians and Dads and Kids and Chicks. Stay Home! Awww Im sorry. I take it back. You guys are alright. Fuck.
sometimes a good punch in the head can fix these type of problems, the longer you leave it the more it festers.
A MALE THAT HAS OBSESSES ON FASHION/APPEARANCES LONG ENOUGH TO BE CATEGORIZED AS “HIPSTER” or someone that has spent a significant portion of their life portraying a role of dress-up….
REMOVE HIS TESTICLES, REMOVE THE MALE CARD, BANISHMENT FROM THE ORIENTATION OF MALE.
that was the worst article i have ever read
a bunch of crying wussies.
“you can get stitches if you get hit with a fiberglass board”
It has nothing to do with Saturdays. As a life long surfer from California, who has been surfing Rockaway for about 5 years now, I have never heard a single newby say that they were turned onto it because of Saturdays. Rockaway Taco was the beginning of the problem. Those guys were the pioneers of hipsters in Rockaway. Then rippers opened up and New York Magazine did a whole feature on it, etc.
the funny part is that once its actually over 4 foot, not to mention freezing cold, theres hardly anyone around. The only time there is a real problem is in the summer when the waves are 1-3 ft. In Puerto Rico and Hawaii they call that flat, and they don’t even go out
you are right, but Saturdays sucks anyway
I don’t think Saturday’s is necessary the problem but, more like the Mollusk shop. They might of ruined surfing in NYC or made it the best thing ever. Depending how you look at it. The thing about New York is it’s al about fashion. So if you have your Japanese rubber wetsuit and your Hull that isn’t made for shitty closeout beach breaks your now cool. You pretty much will not find more kooks than you will in Rockaway. At times it is completely mind blowing. Watch the 90th st cam and watch people take each other out. It’s actually dangerous at times.
If you learned to surf at Rockaway you are a kook. No if’s, and’s or but’s.
When a break has small waves and fulled with longboarders, everyone drops in on everyone.. look at Malibu.
Start to complain when its happening in decent sized surf, which is when the hipsters disappear and so the problem is gone
sounds exactly like canada.
like all breaks, theres beginner/kook areas…90th is it….stop crying about it,and do down the sand a bit..whats worse: ‘hipsters’(your new lame term for beginners) or all you cry babies that get cut off (but dont even bottom turn half the time anyways)..youre all kooks so stfu and paddle out..u get punched now and then, youll learn…like EVERYWHERE ELSE.
yep, do something about it or stop sooking. i find a swift verbal stops them most of the time. if not, turn on some heat. but when it’s just hopeless, i gave up getting the inside. just sit on the outside and let the idiots drop in on each other and you can burn down the line.
It is like this all over. San Francisco is way worse than Rockaway, with any day head high and clean being over run by hipster goons sporting 5/4/3 wetties, no booties, and retro fish. The exodus down the coast of these idiots, who are pouring out to the out of the way spots and creating mayhem. The boys are having to step up and regulate big time, just to explain the rules. Its simple: Look around, figure out who’s who, don’t drop in on people. This should be mandatory training at surf schools, except its kooks teaching kooks, so….
Blame it on the A A A A train baby
What a load of crybaby bullshit! Welcome to real life.
Did the WT comp have anything to do with this?
Nothing, its just on of STAB’s segues….
Naw people that take the A train when its cold and change on the boardwalk are hardcore. most of the “hipsters” drive out there in there vans they use as freelance prop stylists or art handlers
so, beat the fucking hipsters up!
you gotta say something. somebody’s has to lay down the law otherwise this behavior goes unchecked. I got mauled by a hipster on a longboard and if it wasn’t for my 4/3 wetsuit I’d probably be missing part of my intestine…I made sure I let him know how I felt and I’m sure that now he’s very careful about dropping in on someone.
Fucking Stab mag. Reporting from thousands of miles away about cultures they no nothing about.
Haha, you got mauled by a hipster.
Errr, people all over the world are taking up surfing in big numbers. Older crew teach the newer crew the rules in the surf by talking to one another.
Saw a Hipster at my local beach get the biggest barrel and spat out.
sounds like a pretty fucking shit place to me
I’m from California and grew up there and Hawaii. I have been surfing my whole life. I surf Rockaway now becasue I live in Queens. There are some real idiots in the water in Rockaway. They’re usually out when the surf is small so I don’t sweat it, except for the big fat latino guy who rides a giant orange log and thinks he owns the beach. I tell him to shut up or I’ll slap him and that usually does the trick. On the rare days when it’s pumping they don’t show up because they can’t even paddle out. There is more surf etiquette over in Long Beach.
