Real talk with Kelly Slater

During the Nike US Open of Surfing, Kelly Slater sat down with Sal Masekela at the Shorebreak Hotel and had a very, very candid discussion. This is the footage of that discussion, in which Kelly talks about many different things like Dane Reynolds, Twitter, sunscreen and more. He offers some excellent insights. Kell’s thoughtfulness and articulation make him a very good interview subject.

What’s with the backing track & effects on the voices? Made a good interview very annoying.

2.

Kelly Slater… the most sellfish surfer in surfing history!! After 11 ASP titles that made him a very rich and famous guy (or do you think Quiksilver would invest what they did in KS only as a freesurfer????)
And now, just about to retire, he assumes this posture. Shame on you, Kelly Slater!! You had 25 years to use your reputation to change the sport for better, and what you did?? Tried a rebel tour, made money form ASP titles and NOTHING else!

James B,

Just because you’re part of something, doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to criticize it. It’s called freedom of speech. Unless James B is actually Assad from Syria, who reads Stab between cullings.

KS has a better insight into the machinations of the monster than anyone else and rightfully so played the game.

In short, James B, have you never gone to the pub after work and bitched about your employer despite their paying you.

I admire KS – he’s erudite, talented, and at x11 champion has earnt the right to say what he likes about the monster that is the surfing industry.

4.

yeah shit, i mean, does anybody actually wear quiksilver t shirts anymore?

5.

yeah, ditch the soundtrack. Completely annoying.

1.

exactly who cares if surfing is on prime time tv ,i would rather it isnt only companies trying to make money from exploiting it .

2.

    3.

THE MUSIC RUINS IT!!! Couldn’t continue watching…. too annoying…!!

4.

5.

hmm yeah… i’ve always felt those WCT comps were a big sponsorship wank fest. Sorta like cigarette companies sponsoring yatch races back in the 80s.

Even though my favourite surfers are Slater, Dane, JJF, and I watched the entire Teahupoo webcast ,i’ll probably never buy Quiksilver Oneill or Billabong.

6.

7.

Who decided to put a crappy soundtrack behind this, otherwise interesting, interview? That person should go back to working fast food joints. Back-of-house.

8.

Kelly is right.
Surf is not like Tennis, Soccer, Basketball and other sports that if is growing, is just build one more files, one more square… waves are limited, and the brands does not give a shit for us.
Every t-shirt that we buy, every shorts, they use the money to make more publicity and put more and more people in the water.
And them no one knows where the money that they make is going!
This big brands never, I said never! spend a dollar to try to build good artificial waves, artificial reefs and etc…

Surf is different, and deserves attention!

9.

lol sal is such a fat cunt, hes a good cunt, but a fat cunt

10.

Be interesting to know which sunblock Kelly was talking about. Especially pertinent for grommies.

11.

shit interview

    12.

shit comment Nige. it was an excellent interview by someone who knows the real deal about the industry. Let me guess, you work for Hurley…

13.

brasil is the future. whilst aus, us, haw, europe and south africa stagnate, brazil booms. this is the market the surf co’s want and it’s reflected by the rosters.
plus brazzos are the most exciting surfers on the planet.

    14.

c’mon dude, there’s patriotism and then there ridiculousness. How many brazilian free surfers are there? they arent the most exciting surfers on the planet, Medina will definitely have a run at a world title and most likely claim a couple within the next 5-8 yrs, but exciting surfers are guys like kelly, dane, taj, two johns, kerr etc.

      15.

thats because the only footage you see from brazilians is the contests moron, there are tons of good free surfers in brazil only you dont get to see them

    16.

what a stupid comment barrel arms. Aussies will break you brazillians like Ivan Drago did to apollo creed.

17.

its easy for kelly to say he doesn’t care about the growth of the sport of surfing, becuase he has made his money to retire.. you cant just surf with no sponsors or support and make the money he has made.

    100% correct, James!!!

    20.

    James B for president

22.

Kobi Clomelo wants to be Coby Clomelo! Grind rails, kickflip onto never ending wave pool, rooting a chick doggy in the tube. I’m barely out of the womb. Bitchen (Didn’t watch video. Saving net credit for waves).

23.

dont be such a stupid cunt jamesb. the guy grew up. opinions and feelings on issues change and mature… for some. check yourself in 10 years mate.

24.

You sound like a jilted lover James B. Get over it.

25.

why was it necessary to have a soundtrack? why?

26.

I simply love bath salts.

27.

Great interview. Now please re-edit w/out the music. That was horrible.

28.

Kelly’s comment isn’t about not making a life out of it, its about being a competitive surfer.
There are pro’s that want the money, but most of them just want to be recognized as one of the best in their lifetime and Kelly is no exception. Try becoming a pro surfer without sponsors and/or money, you’re goin to be disappointed.

29.

The most interesting surfer in history when he is in the water but about as dull and predictably trite as humanly possible in interviews. Almost sounds like a politician. Another round of fatherhood is what he needs now. Raise some kids hands on and get some perspective on the world. Pro surfing is entering an era of withering and wandering again anyway that will be greatly amplified by Slaters pull back in 2013-14. A brazilian world champ will the the nail in the coffin of the industry. Whether he makes it a dozen or a bakers dozen is somewhat irrelevant. Do retirement “expectations” cause him to stick around? Has Dorian set the bar too high for him to match as KS has never had the heart of a big wave surfer. Nothing wrong with that but some will see it as a shortcoming or weakness. I hope someday he just gets to live a normal life.

    30.

You’re talking about the man who’s won the Eddie Aikau, who charges Tavarua on the biggest days, Sunset, Teahupo’o.., eeerm

31.

slater is about as funny as a fart in a phone booth.

    32.

farts are indeed funny when you bomb someone else with one .

33.

What is Kelly on about? There is an independent association that runs surfing … It’s called the ASP. Sponsors put on WT events by funding them and setting up the arena at each location, but the core of it is run by the ASP. The judges, criteria and running format have nothing to do with brands. The only way the sponsor is involved at an event where it shouldn’t be is: Location choice (city beach breaks should not be allowed as locations for the sake of generating more revenue for the sponsor) and by appointing a brand-associated ‘contest director’ who decides what conditions to run in (this call should really be with the ASP as well). All big sports have sponsors, and the sports which don’t have lots of sponsorship, athletes have to work day jobs to survive.

    34.

LOL at Froth dog, haha ASP independent ha ha ha….stop it froth dog…it’s hurting…

    35.

And where do you think the purse comes from, the money tree?

36.

nothing learned. nothing said. for 8 minutes.

37.

bunch of cunts, good interview indeed, sal is an awesome guy (for from the comps box). Kelly king, I bet, 90% of the haters here are under 19 yrs old and fat, and prob not good surfers…

38.

Froth dog, the ASP is not independent. The Big 3 have their people on the board.

    39.

Oh really? I didn’t know this … tell me more. It’s not exactly public knowledge is it
    ?

    40.

I just wanted to come back to this some months after now the Zoasea thing has been announced and Kelly is involved in it somehow with his manager being the owner and all that and Kelly seems to have a big say in how surfing is set up in recent years.

OK the ASP may have had people from the big three on the board. But it is (was) still a non-profit, somewhat independant external body that operated from grassroots level, through to the qualifying series and the WT that set the rules, judging etc. NOW it seems we have the whole thing taken over by Zoasea – not just the media and sponsorship rights, they OWN and will RUN the whole tour, will employ thier own judges, etc. How is this an improvement? What will happen to the ASP rulebook? Its baffling that this has been allowed to happen. Seems much worse to me than the previous model.

41.

Kelly wants to keep scratching his downstair region.

42.

Kelly was great for competitive surfing, but in my opinion, if he keeps winning, he’s making it boring… He could improve on his legacy by stepping in and helping the ASP fix what is broken, that would be far better than winning a 12th title. It’s annoying to see him critical of the ASP when he hasn’t bothered to try and help them fix the problems, not to mention the fact that he holds Quiksilver blameless in all of this.

    43.

That’s assuming the ASP want any help. He’s been banging on about offering different formats and other suggestions for ages mate. As for winning titles, when someone good enough to take it from him comes along he’ll get bored of losing and move on. Where do you get off blaming him for being a hard core dedicated surf fan who loves his game and likes making a living doing what he loves?

44.

Sick Porn music! But where was the porn???

45.

What the hell was he on about with the sunblock? Poor Kelly has been listening to the pseudo-scientists, i.e. his landlord, and runs the risk of putting a whole generation of young surfers off using sunblock. Your landlords avocado mix just might not save those of us in the southern hemisphere from melanoma. Still love you and your surfing though.

    46.

He’s right about the sun cream. Do a bit of research.

    47.

pseudo-scientists?? you bet he’s right on sunscreen and all the other other toxic crap out there…. perhaps you should do your homework as well as Kelly does. his focus on knowledge and wellness is one of big factors in his ability and longevity. i’m just grateful that he cares enough to share some of what he’s learned. he tweeted about the sunscreen a while back… it’s called avasol – looks totally killer.

48.

i want to see kelly do a between 2 ferns with zach galifinaskis.

49.

Surely Kelly doesn’t need to rent in Santa Barbara?? Spend some of that moolah on a sweet little pad

50.

he’s prolly got rentals all over the world

51.

sun screen, not cream you pervert

    52.

You’re not a pervert? How boring is your life mate?

53.

Interesting to hear it straight from Slater himself…. He’s just like the rest of us.

Even with all of those crumbs in the bank,

He hates his job.

    54.

    LOL!^

55.

The fact that the surfing world is being run by companies it doesn´t just happen in the WT, it happens in every single city, town or wherever there is a surf comp (with just a few exceptions). But honestly, as a surfer, I don’t think with an independent organization we could be were we are right now. ´Cause its not a sport that practice it the whole world, but to the eyes of the audience its attractive, wether you are a surfer or not. And thats what companies really care, and spend huge amounts of money on the sport.

56.

I think it’s great that the pro surf system is run by independent companies and sponsors, quite anarchic in a way. OK maybe self-regulation is dangerous or risky inasmuch as conflicts of interest appearing, but generally companies know the public aren’t fools and have to adhere to good practice or they risk losing their market, which is healthy.

57.

This guy should write a book about high performance (and mantaining it). How to keep focused, how to eat well, what mind set is the best, how to stay hungry for victory and specially, how to adapt and make the best choices on an everlasting changeable environment. I think he has a lot to contribute on this field.

58.

Anti hurley and nike everyone. Lets put them out. One person at a time. Time to slowly take back whats ares. Rusty lost oneill lets bring back and back true surf brands. Atleast ones that started there.

59.

Nothing but death can part the couple. He can hardly speak.I can’t afford a new car.The sun was shining and the sky was crystal clear.Opportunity knocks but once.I have just heard from my sister, Mary.I have just heard from my sister, Mary.Love me

60.

Awesome interview, but I do agree, very bad taste on backtracks, also too loud at points.
